Rethymno Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Rethymno Transportation

You can travel to Rethymno by bus, car, taxi or boat to the city. If you prefer to travel by plane, you can fly to Heraklion and then drive to Rethymno. Parking is at a premium, so it is better to travel around the city by walking, bus or taxi.

How to Get to Rethymno

Since there is no airport in Rethymno, you cannot take a plane directly there. You can fly to Heraklion and then travel by land to Rethymno. Other options are bus travel from Iraklion and Chania or driving a car and parking in the public parking lot at Plateia Plastira at the far western edge. You can also arrive via boat on one of the daily trips to and from Piraeus.

Getting around Rethymno

Once you arrive, transportation inside Rethymno is another matter. Many of the streets are too narrow for a car which makes walking a preferred method of getting around. It is best to park in the public lot, and walk to shops, restaurants and entertainment. With the police station next to the lot, parking is safe and secure. If walking is too difficult, taxis are readily available to take you where you need to go. There is also a bus that allows you to hop on and off at tourist spots including some monasteries outside the city proper.

Convenience vs. Price

The bus is the best price deal for traveling to and from Rethymno and around the city. However, buses have some significant delays and may travel far from your desired route. If you are willing to pay a little more, you can travel by taxi and cut off more than an hour of your trip back to an airport.
