Negombo Things To Do – Attractions & Must See

Negombo Things to Do

Located in Sri Lanka, Negombo is a major city. It offers an interesting combination of colonial and native attractions you’ll want to check out.

Fishing Village

Negombo is not only a major city, but also a fishing village. This is how it was founded originally and while other industries have appeared in the city, this is still a major backbone within the local community. Walking past the smaller fishing villages on the outskirts of town can be an eye-opening. It shows how many in the area make their money, but it also illustrates the discrepancy in money from those who live on the outskirts and those who live in the city center. Visiting a fishing village is enlightening.

Catamaran

The catamarans used by fishermen in the area are almost all handmade in the region. Due to this, most catamarans look different from the next and boast an interesting color combination. You can take a ride on a locally-designed catamaran if you wish, or you can just sit back and snap a few great pictures of these interesting boats.

Canal Boat Hire

When Europeans started to colonize the region, they brought with them the understanding of agriculture and the need to quickly move goods from one trading post to another. This resulted in the construction of canals in Sri Lanka. While most goods are now shipped through alternative transportation means, you can take a tour through the canals by hiring a boat service to take you through the canal.

Little Rome Negombo

Negombo is about 99% Christian. In order to provide those living in the city an opportunity to worship, several excellent churches were constructed. Many of these churches’ design was heavily influenced by the Europeans.

Angurukaramulla Temple

This is a central place of worship for Hindus in the region.
