Lloret de Mar Travel Guide

Lloret de Mar Travel Guide

Lloret de Mar is a historic seaside town on the Costa Brava of Spain’s Catalonia region. Tourists love this quaint area with the medieval Castle of Sant Joan looking down on the popular Mediterranean beaches and postcard worthy town.

Culture and History

The Catalunya region speaks two languages: Catalan and Spanish Castilian. Historically there has been conflict between the Catalan and Spanish cultures, and Lloret de Mar is staunchly Catalan with captions “Catalonia is not Spain” and “Independent to Catalonia” are actually written in the city’s walls. Today though there is no real conflict between the two groups.

Walking around the town, you will find historical significance to almost everything you see. If you want some good luck for your trip, go find the bronze fisherman’s wife statue. People say that if you touch her foot while looking at the horizon, all your wishes will come true.

Best Things To Do

Window and souvenir shopping are popular in Lloret de Mar. There are many nice streets with shops selling everything a tourist could need including swim suits, bijouterie, souvenirs and other stuff. For less touristy items and a fun cultural experience try the Farmers’ Market in Blanes. It is a real local market popular for its fresh fruit and vegetables supplied by the farmers from Blanes and the surrounding area.

Best Places To Go

Costa Brava Lloret De Mar is the ideal place if you want to go to the beach to swim or sunbathe, but you might need a bit of luck to hit a warm enough weather window for swimsuits. Even if it isn’t quite warm enough for swimming and sun bathing though, there are plenty of cafes along the beach to get a warm drink and enjoy the view.

Another thing you must see while in Lloret de Mar is the Pinya de Rosa. One of the jewels of Lloret de Mar, this is a cactus garden on a cliff overlooking the sea. The gardens give a great view of the water and always have unique plants to see, many of which flower in the winter months.

Tourist Traps

Lloret de Mar hardly has what you would call tourist traps, but there are a few places to avoid in order to save your money. You will notice a dramatic price increase along the whole of the main drag and a couple of side streets leading from the beach towards the bus station.
