Exeter Things To Do – Attractions & Must See

Exeter Things to Do

Exeter is a romantic city out of Devon, England. With so much history and intrigue there is plenty to see and do while visiting. Here are a few of the top spots to check out.

Exeter Cathedral

This is the crown jewel in the city. The beautiful Exeter Cathedral and surrounding grounds looks straight out of your favorite Medieval TV show.  You can spend hours just wandering the exterior of the grounds and that is before you enter. Just remember, this building is an active church so if there is a worship in session, please be respectful.

Underground Passageways

There is an extensive underground passageway system under nearly the entire city. Some of these tunnels date all the way back to the 14th century. Many of the tunnels were originally constructed in order to help bring water to the city. This is not something you can really do on your own though. As it is easy to become lost and stuck, guided tours are offered. These tours last only around 30 minutes but are enough to give you a sense of the passageway system. If you are claustrophobic though this is not the tour for you, since there will be times where your back and chest are pressed against walls. Tour providers also have different body size requirements in order to fit inside of the tunnels.

Rougemont Castle

The Rougemont Castle has a very interesting history behind it. It dates all the way back to the Norman Imposition. William the Conqueror pushed through the area and the castle went up in 1066. Some areas of the castle are in complete ruins while other areas are newly constructed. You can tour the ruins of the castle.
