Chowpatty Beach, Mumbai, India – Insider Tips

Things to do in Mumbai Chowpatty Beach

Nothing beats kicking back on a beautiful beach. Chowpatty Beach in Mumbai provides some unique experiences for you to check out. Here are a few tips and suggestions for what to do while visiting.

Show Up Early

Chowpatty Beach is connected to Juhu Beach. Combined, these two are the most popular beaches in all of Mumbai. Chowpatty is the smallest of the two yet it is the most crowded. So, if you want a good spot on the beach, you need to show up early.

Now, one thing to keep in mind is that going to the beach in India is a bit different than visiting the beach in Europe, North America, or really most other locations. You will not have people sitting around on beach towels and in swimming suits. Most people are fully clothed and just like the breeze and sights.

Not Really For Swimming

The beach really isn’t for swimming. Mumbai water is heavily polluted so few people actually go swimming (it’s probably recommended you don’t submerge yourself in the water). As a Westerner, you’ll also stand out, so expect a few glances and some people coming up to you, asking for some money. This is one reason to just walk the beach and enjoy the cooler breeze off of the water.

Cafes and Stalls

There are plenty of small cafes and stalls located near the entrance of the beach. If you show up early, you’ll be able to watch many of these set up. Some will set up on the beach, which makes it easy to grab a fresh drink or snack.

This region of Mumbai is one of the best when it comes to picking up spiced beverages. If you’re interested in trying something new, such as a chilled, spiced tea, make sure to try one here. Walking down the beach with a chilled tea is one of the activities both the wealthy and poor in the city often share side by side.

Ganesh Chaturthi

If you can, visit the beach sometime between August and September. This is when the Ganesh Chaturthi festival takes place. While the crowds will pick up, you will be able to experience something completely different when stopping by.

Night Stalls

Visiting the beach during the evening time can give you a different take on Chowpatty Beach. The temperature drops, you won’t have the direct sunlight, and more food venders will be ready to serve you some delicious meals.
