Athens Things To Do – Attractions & Must See

Athens Things to Do

Athens is one of the most historic cities in the world. The capital city of Greece offers plenty to do, especially historical tours.

Acropolis

The Acropolis is one of the most famous landmarks in the world. The ancient fortress is awe-inspiring as you make the climb to the top of the “upper city” and Parthenon. The Acropolis museum was recently restored to re-capture the essence of this historic location.

The Parthenon was also refurbished as part of the restoration project. This must-see structure is historically significant as the crown jewel of Athens and the European world. The Parthenon colonnades were also recently restored after being wrongly assembled during previous restoration projects.

Ancient Agora

Before or after visiting The Acropolis, you should visit Ancient Agora. Located below The Acropolis, the Agora was a meeting and trading place during Biblical times. In addition to being a marketplace, the Agora was a place where people assembled to discuss business, politics, current events, the nature of the universe, and more topics.

For Christian travelers, you can experience the Apostle Paul’s journey to preach in Athens. Paul spoke in the marketplace and at a famous rock that served as a meeting place called the Areopagus. You can view a plaque with Paul’s sermon carved into the side of the rock.

Overall, the architecture at Ancient Agora is magnificent and many of the original pieces have been preserved or restored. You can also view Greek artifacts that have been saved for public viewing in the museum. You will certainly want to plan the entire day to learn about one of the most famous ancient cultures.

National Archaeological Museum

History is the center of tourism in Athens, and the National Archaeological Museum is another special attraction to add to your to-do list.

The museum features massive bronze pieces and sculptures capturing Greek mythology and the ancient world. Most impressive are the giant bronze statues recovered from the sea off Cape Artemision.

Modern Attractions

Athens is mostly about history from ancient periods, but the city also hosted the 2004 Summer Olympics to showcase the city’s modernization. Unfortunately, many of the venues used in the Olympics have been abandoned to become virtual ghost towns.

Instead, you might want to visit the Central Market. This is a fish and meat market in the heart of old Athens. Even if you are not buying seafood, it is interesting to browse around and see how the market operates.

Overall, Athens leans heavily toward historical attractions to visit. But, you can still find modern things to do.
