Alor Setar Transportation

Traveling to Alor Setar is possible using several modes of transportation including air, road, and rail. You can also drive your own car or travel by bus. Within the city, bus travel can be a bit confusing, therefore allowing for extra time is beneficial. Bus schedules are for guidance only, not exact.

Traveling to Alor Setar

There are many modes of transportation for traveling to Alor Setar. Daily airplane flights come into Sultan Abdul Halim Airport, about 10 kilometers from the city center. If you prefer traveling by train, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) provides regular trips from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar. You can also choose to travel by private car or bus for a more flexible schedule.

Bus Transportation

Bus service is available from from Alor Setar to Kuala Kedah. The route is run by HBR Group of Companies. Usually there is a sign in front of the bus that is often handwritten, indicating the destination.

The route starts at Shahab Perdana (Alor Setar’s bus terminal) and makes some stops around the town at such places as former Alor Setar’s General Hospital (now Kota Setar District Health Office), Pekan Rabu, Simpang Kuala, Telok Chengai, Telok Kechai, Batas Paip and Kuala Kedah. The route ends at Kampung Nelayan.

You have to tell the driver your destination to find out the fare. Be as specific as possible. Most of them are nice, even though they don’t speak much English and will help you depart in the correct location.

When traveling by bus within the city, leave plenty of time for travel. Bus schedules are only a guideline and buses may come at any time without adhering to time.

Traveling by Car

Alor Setar is well linked by the North South Highway and the Federal Route 1. It takes about five hours if you drive on the highway. This is the quickest mode of transportation with the exception of flying.
