Almeria is the capital city of the Almeria Province, located on the southeast coast of Spain along the Mediterranean Sea. It is a very popular location for travelers looking for a seaside vacation with an array of different options for day excursions. From sightseeing to relaxing on the beach, there are a lot of things to do in Almeria.

Visit the Alcazaba Fortress

The Alcazaba is hard to miss. The historic fortress sits atop of a hill at the center of town, dominating the city’s skyline. It was first erected in the 11th century. Of course, it has seen some changes over the years as it changed hands and was altered to fit the weaponry of the time, but much of it is still intact today, making it a must-see for tourists in the area. Historians will love the fortress because of its historical and religious significance. and thehe Arabic gardens are the favorite of most visitors.  Admission is free to residents of EU countries, and you can go almost anywhere in the fortress, including the lookout towers where there are some astounding views.

It’s a Resort Town

Almeria is home to a host of different world-class seaside resorts. They usually revolve around the small villages in the area. Some of the more popular resorts are Roquetas De Mar, Almerimar, and Mojacar. This was an area that was dominated by the Moors for a period of time. This is apparent in the architecture of Mojacar. One sign of classic Moorish architecture is the “sugar cube” style house that they built that still stand in the village to this day.

Sierra Nevada Desert

There is only one desert on the entire continent of Europe and it is in the Almeria area, which is the Sierra Nevada. There are also mountains and other great natural beauties. The roads in this part of the region can be dangerous for drivers inexperienced with mountains. It’s advisable to hire a local drive you around if you are not comfortable doing so. There is not a big margin for error in the mountains when it comes to driving.
