Yogyakarta Shopping – Shops, Stores, Best Buys & Insider Tips

Yogyakarta Shopping

Capital of the Java region of Indonesia, Yogyakarta provides a wide range of shopping options, including inexpensive gifts for family back home. Here are some of the best shopping destinations to take in while in the city.

Malioboro Street Market

The street market is actually a street lined with small storefronts. Some of the goods from these stores spill out into the walkway, but for the most part, most of everything is located inside of these storefronts. Here you’ll find a hodgepodge of just about everything. You’ll be able to locate anything from leather sandals to wigs to antiques. It’s a nice spot to pick up items for friends back home without spending much money.

Art Studio 76

The art here is not your traditional tourist art. Everything here is hand-crafted and unique. Many of the items here are constructed with both silver and mother of pearl. From small, abstract designs to game sets or jewelry, the art on display here is truly beautiful. It also is different from nearly anything else you’ll find in Yogyakarta. For the price, the art is affordable when considering it is made from silver and mother of pearl. If you’re on the market for a priceless display of the true craftsmanship found in Yogyakarta, make sure to stop by Art Studio 76.

Prepare To Barter

Bartering is the name of the game, especially when in the street market. There isn’t as much leeway for this when in a location such as Art Studio 76. Never just settle on the offered price right out of the gate though. Offer a lower price and you’ll be told if there is bartering or not. If the item is sold on the street or open market, it is an item you’ll barter for.

The Sheraton Mustika Gift Shop

Located inside the Sheraton Mustika hotel, the gifts here are all designed by local artists. You can find elegant purses, beautiful jewelry and woven items. All of these items are one of a kind, but the price is marked up a bit due to it being sold at the Sheraton.
