Tips on Avoiding Rhodes (Island) Tourist Traps

Rhodes (Island) Tourist Traps

Rhodes Island is one of many Greek islands that are popular with tourists. They are popular because they are beautiful on many levels. While they do attract tourists, the tourist attract people who want to make money off the tourists. Some offer good services for the money, but some are just wastes of time or money. Here are some tips on avoiding Rhodes (Island) tourist traps.

Last Resort

There are resorts such as Trianta and a few others, that are just like most resorts in the world. They are designed for people who just want to stay in the resort and do nothing else. While they are nice, they are not the real Greek experience. There are shops that are supposed to be like the real thing, but their prices are very high and may not be authentic at all.

The Harbor

Around the harbor there are women selling trinkets, good luck charms, and psychic readings. They will try to give you the reading and then make you pay whether you agreed to or not. Also beware of schemes involving timeshares.

Unofficial Market

The Municipal Market is official sounding, and it may be on some Greek Islands, but here it is just a tourist trap. It is close to Mandraki Harbor, but the building itself is not impressive and not clean. There are merchants selling items that are not authentic, and highly priced. Instead, go to the downtown area, which is much more authentic, and only a few minutes away.

Other Places to Avoid

Butterfly Valley has many visitors saying there are in fact no butterflies, however, this could be seasonal.

Tourist district shops are places that look official, but really they just sell cheap trinkets like earrings, stones or statues. Shop owners in these places are aggressive, so you just should walk away.

Seven Springs is another place that is getting bad reviews. While it’s a pretty area, it’s supposed to be a great natural spot, but the springs are tiny and not that impressive.
