Puerto Rico, Caribbean

When To Go

The commonwealth of Puerto Rico experiences beautiful tropical weather throughout the year. Many North Americans visit during the winter months, since the same holidays are celebrated minus the frigid weather. Other times of the year are less popular, but are good times for reduced prices.

high season: November to April
low season: June to September
shoulder season: May, October

Weather Information

Puerto Rico experiences an endless summer, averaging 83 degrees year-round, and benefits from constant trade winds that help keep temperatures enjoyable. Humidity is consistently high, except during January through May. Rain is common throughout the year, with heavier amounts in the north coast, near San Juan. Hurricane season runs from August through October, but storms rarely occur.

Crowd Information

Visitor traffic peaks during March and April, when many North Americans escape the cold by visiting the island. The holidays bring very high tourist demand, as well as many cultural events and festivals, such as the famous music and dance event call Le Lo Lai Festival offered throughout the year.

Closure Information

Businesses and government offices close on local holidays, election days, and U.S. holidays. Christmas, New Year's, and Easter are very big on the island.

When to Save

The cheapest time to visit is during the summer off-season; however, since this is hurricane season in the Caribbean, there's a possible risk of rain or storms. The best deals are offered August through October.

When to Book

Due to high supply, airfare to Puerto Rico is almost always reasonably priced. To be assured of the best available prices and availability during high season, book a minimum of two months out. During the low and shoulder seasons, deals can be found a week out at several hotel properties on the island. Also, as many cruise ships stop in Puerto Rico and travelers plan pre- and post-cruise stays, hotels in San Juan are in higher demand, so be sure to book ahead.
