Which City Has the World’s Most Expensive Sandwiches?

There’s no such thing as a free lunch—especially if you’re in Geneva, where the average price of a sandwich costs more than an oil change.

Hotels.com  released its annual Club Sandwich Index, which ranks the average costs for a club sandwich in cities around the world. Geneva, Switzerland topped the list with a $30.45 chicken, bacon, egg, lettuce, and mayonnaise concoction—the particular type of sandwich used “as a barometer of affordability” in this study. Paris, France comes is a close second with a $27.45 ‘wich. And in third place we have Oslo, Norway, where your club will run you $26.72.

This year, Geneva pushed Paris out of the top spot. In 2012, Paris had the most expensive sandwiches at $33.10 on average. But overall, says the report, sandwich prices are falling like stray crumbs after a hearty bite, as this year’s most expensive sandwich is a few dollars cheaper than last year’s. Since 2012, sandwich prices have fallen in dozens of cities, including Paris, Oslo, Rome, Tokyo, Helskini, and Berlin.

On the domestic front, New York serves the most costly clubs in America, with a $17.51 double decker—number 13 on this year’s world ranking.

Researchers calculated the Sandwich Index using real prices for a “sandwich staple,” according to Hotels.com. A representative from the company said that the chicken, bacon, egg, lettuce, and mayo club is “available on hotel menus across the globe.” Overall, analysts looked at menus at 30 hotels in popular cities for travel across the globe, scanning sandwich prices at a total 840 properties.

Would you pay 30 bucks for a sandwich?
