What We’re Reading: Shoes the Travel Pros Wear

Find out which shoes adorn the feet of travel-industry professionals in our weekly roundup of travel news and stories.

Death to the Mini Bar

I will be so happy if the hotel mini bar goes away forever. According to the Economist, it might do just that! Marriott and Hilton are getting rid of their mini bars, as are many other hotel brands. David Samuels of The Atlantic, however, does not share my disdain for the sly little automated temptress. In Elegy for the Minibar, Samuels writes, “Despite its shortcomings, the minibar was a faithful sentry that had stayed up late and kept me company in times of danger and personal sorrow. It had never failed to deliver something—liquor, candy, clean T-shirts, fresh socks—that made me feel less alone.”

Shoes the Travel Pros Wear

The New York Times reveals which shoes are on the well-traveled feet of the most experienced road warriors. Recommended brands include Hush Puppies, Cole Haan, and Clarks. Hiking boots, sneakers, and orthopedic varieties are pretty much the only footwear mentioned, so The Times gets zero points for style. See for yourself.

What People Complain About When They Complain About Plane Food

What’s wrong with plane food? Everything, in my opinion. But shockingly, most travelers aren’t so unhappy with the quality of the food itself. According to ABC News, a new survey shows that the top plane-food complaint is “when other passengers bring strong smelling food aboard the airplane.” Other complaints include the lack of options and high cost.

Only 24 percent of people complained about food quality. Really? Only one traveler out of four has a huge problem with meals like this?

To you, what’s the worst thing about plane food? Weigh in below.
