Pilot Claims He Sees Drone in NYC Airspace

A pilot for the Italian airline Alitalia was landing at New York’s JFK airport on Monday afternoon when he claims that he saw an unmanned aircraft in the skies.

The pilot was able to land the plane without incident, but radioed in his sighting, saying, “We saw a drone, a drone aircraft.”

The LA Times reports that the pilot claims the mystery object was flying at around 1,500 feet.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the report. The agency released a statement stating, “The FAA is investigating a report from the pilot of an international airline that he saw a small, unmanned or remote-controlled aircraft while on final approach to Runway 31 Right at John F. Kennedy International Airport at about 2 p.m.”

CBS News reports that the FBI is also investigating, and that they have asked anyone with information about the unmanned device to contact them. According to the FBI, the unmanned aircraft was black, about three feet wide, and had four propellers. They are also reporting that the aircraft came within 200 feet of the Alitalia flight.
