Daily Daydream: Mexico’s Secret Paradise

Less than a 30-minute boat ride away from Spring Break oasis Cancun, Isla Mujeres feels a world away from that party paradise. The island’s name means “Island of the Women,” but the name comes from a number of legends surrounding the goddess Ixchel, and not from any gender imbalance in the population. You can visit Ixchel’s temple on the island.

Isla Mujeres is ideally situated for divers, with great sites like the Caves of the Sleeping Sharks (where you can see exactly what the name implies) and nearby coral reefs. Don’t miss the Bay Cross, an underwater bronze sculpture memorializing souls lost at sea.

Where is it? Eight miles away from Cancun. Fly to Cancun (check prices) and then hop on a short boat ride to the island.

Where to Stay? At the centrally located Nautibeach Condos.

What Else Should I Know? Visit in August for a festival celebrating the founding of the island.

Who’s it For? Anyone who needs to relax, non- Spring Breakers.
