Weekly Weird: The Case of the Knife in the Mayonnaise

This week in travel, a man tried the stupidest smuggling method ever, a TSA agent got scalding mad (literally), and you can now vacation like Hitler. Read on for the full stories.

  • Pretty much everyone’s aware of the rule about not bringing more than 3.4 ounces of liquid on a plane. So if you’re trying to smuggle a weapon aboard, trying to conceal it in a giant tub of liquid is probably not the best hiding place. Unfortunately, as the Huffington Post reports, one passenger was not that bright. A man tried to smuggle a knife onto a flight by hiding it in a full tub of mayonnaise, which is considered a liquid and not allowed on flights in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces. Shockingly, the man was still allowed on the plane, although he probably had a very dry in-flight sandwich since both his mayo and knife were confiscated.
  • A pilot found himself in hot water (literally) after asking a TSA agent to stop swearing. The Daily Mail reports that pilot Steven Trivett overheard TSA agent Lateisha El swearing during a conversation with co-workers, and asked her to act more professionally. When Trivett tried to get the screener’s name by looking at her identification, El allegedly threw an entire cup of hot coffee on the pilot. El was charged with harassment and misdemeanor assault and probably didn’t even get her caffeine fix before getting carted off.
  • Want to vacation like a famous person? Hitler is probably not the celeb you had in mind, but you’ll soon be able to stay in the Nazi leader’s former retreat. The Huffington Post reports that the Colossus of Prora, which was built to be a vacation spot for Nazis (but was never used) is to be turned into a luxury hotel and condo complex. The site is on the island of Ruegen in the Black Sea, and we’re sure it’s totally not haunted or anything.
