Daily Daydream: Millau Viaduct, France

The world’s tallest bridge can be found 343 meters above the Tarn Valley in France. The Millau Viaduct is an engineering marvel that rivals the Eiffel Tower (in fact, the bridge is actually taller than the tower).

You can experience the 2,460-meter-long bridge in a number of different ways—take it in from the official viewing area and tourist information center, float under it in a canoe, ride across it in an open-top bus, or even view it from the air while you hang glide over it!

The Millau Viaduct crosses from Levezou to Causse du Larza and is near Peyre, one of France’s most beautiful villages. The bridge is a popular way to get to the Mediterranean from Paris.

Where is it? The Tarn Valley, France. The closest international airport is Rodez-Marcillac (check prices).

Where to stay? At the nicely situated Ibis Millau, which is in the center of town and faces the bridge.

What else should I know? It’s free to view the bridge from afar, but expect to pay around $8 to drive across the bridge (depending on the type of car and time of year). Also, pedestrians are not allowed on the bridge.

Who’s it for? Anyone who wants to conquer a fear of heights, engineering-geeks.
