Delta Expands Wi-Fi to Regional Jets

Delta announced it will begin installing in-flight wireless on its 223 regional jets. In a release, the airline says it will be the first domestic carrier to deploy wireless across its entire mainline and regional fleets.

Installation on the regional fleet is expected to be finished by the end of 2011.

Equipping regionals with wireless will fill a rather glaring gap in Delta’s coverage. Regional jets operate many popular business routes, such as New York-Boston and New York-Chicago. Business travelers are generally more likely to find value in the service—or, more usefully for Delta, more likely to pay for it—so adding Wi-Fi to these planes should be a good move for everyone.

Delta has already completed installation on its entire mainline fleet—549 planes in total. Once the regionals are outfitted, Delta will have 772 aircraft equipped with in-flight wireless.
