Delta and Hawaiian Sign Codeshare

Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii

Delta may have struck out (at least for now) on its proposed codeshare agreement with Virgin Blue to Australia, but starting September 15 an agreement with Hawaiian Airlines will make it easier for Delta passengers to get to Hawaii.

The agreement will allow customers to connect between Delta flights and Hawaiian Airlines’ 70 daily inter-island flights on a single ticket. Since Delta already connects the U.S. mainland and Hawaii, the real benefit here is that passengers won’t have to book additional flights if their destinations are beyond Delta’s main Hawaii gateways. According to the press release, Hawaiian flights “will connect Delta customers between Honolulu and Kahului, Lihue, Kona and Hilo, as well as between Kona and Kahului.”

The other main codeshare benefit here is an expansion of customers’ abilities to earn and redeem miles on either carrier. Tickets go on sale September 12.

Is this new agreement likely to impact your choice of carrier on your next trip to Hawaii? Does it affect which destinations in Hawaii you’d consider visiting?
