What’s in a name? A good laugh, if you were one of the dozens of folks who commented on last week’s 10 Funniest Small Town Names in America. I’ve had so much fun reading your suggestions that I decided to round some of them up and give them the glory they deserve.
In the spirit of Uncertain, Texas, 1traveler suggests No Name, Colorado, and geebee writes in with Why, Arizona. HiltonHead2010 reports: “We have a town nearby Cookeville, TN, called Nameless Community.”
Other popular favorites include Tightwad, Missouri; Toad Suck, Arkansas; Cut and Shoot, Texas; Embarrass, Minnesota; Bucksnort, Tennessee; French Lick, Indiana; Peculiar, Missouri; Athol, Massachusetts; and Humptulips, Washington.
Paperclip writes in to say, “Perhaps Intercourse should become a sister city of Climax, MI?”
MaggieGardner says that in Newfoundland, Canada, you can find Blow Me Down and Seldom Come By.
This story was also featured on Yahoo!, spurring more people to write in with suggestions including Lizard Lick, North Carolina; Hopeulikit, Georgia; neighboring towns Difficult and Defeated in Tennessee; Monkeys Eyebrow, Kentucky; Knockemstiff, Ohio; Chicken, Alaska; and, brace yourself, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Wales.
Keep the suggestions coming! And if you’ve been to a town with a funny name, let us know about your experience there. Were there great sandwiches in Toad Suck? Did you get the town name written on a grain of rice in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch? Let us know!
