Passport border crossing regulations delayed until June 2009

Homeland Security has postponed the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative to June 1, 2009, at which point all American citizens will be required to present a passport at the Canadian and Mexican borders.

In 2007, passport agencies became backlogged by the overwhelming amount of applications when passports became a requirement for air travel into Canada and Mexico. The hope is that the 14-month advance notice will allow everyone to apply for passports before they’re required.
