For a taste of the spicy Southwest, tourists can take a bite out of Mesa, Arizona. This town has everything from the Brinton Desert Botanical Garden, which features nearly 150 varieties of cacti and desert plants, to the ancient Hohokam canal system, parts of which can be seen at the Park of the Canals. The city of Mesa is also home to Cactus League Spring Training, where more than 200 Major League Baseball games are held within 30 days. Visitors can also hunt for gold in the nearby Superstition Mountains, and might be lucky enough to find the elusive Lost Dutchman Mine.

Flights to Mesa land just minutes away from downtown at Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport. The area is also served by Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, less than 30 miles away.
