When to Visit San Antonio

by SmarterTravel Staff

With pleasant weather and plenty of outdoor activities year-round, San Antonio is a popular family vacation spot. It can be quite economical, and visitors can find fairs, festivals, or performances on the River Walk, and fiestas at Market Square.

The summer is the most popular time to visit for leisure travel, while the spring, winter, and fall see a lot of business and convention travelers.

  • high season: May to mid-August
  • low season: mid-August to late August, mid-December to late December
  • shoulder season: September to mid-December, January to April

With pleasant weather and high convention and leisure visitation year-round, San Antonio doesn't really have a low season. However, the two less-busy periods listed above bring fewer visitors because of the start of schools in August and the holidays in December.

Weather Information

Located in south central Texas, San Antonio experiences an average year-round temperature of 70 degrees. Summers can be hot, with high temperatures averaging 95 degrees in July. Spring and fall are favorable times to go, with temperatures hovering in the upper 70s to low 80s. Winters bring cooler weather, with temperatures dropping into the 60s.

Crowd Information

The city never gets overcrowded, but July is the busiest month to visit. Many festivals also attract more visitors, including the Fiesta San Antonio in April, the Texas Folklife Festival in June, and the Fall Arts Festival from September through November.

Closure Information

Hotels, shops, and attractions remain open year-round, except for the major theme parks. SeaWorld San Antonio is closed January through February, Six Flags Fiesta is closed December through February, and Schlitterbahn Waterpark is closed October through April

When to Save

San Antonio is an affordable city year-round; however, hotel bargains are harder to find when there are large conventions or major events.

When to Book

Book hotels at least one month in advance for visits during the high season or popular events. Last-minute airfares and hotels are available for those with flexible travel plans. However, those with a set schedule should book flights at least three weeks in advance to obtain lower prices and ensure availability, especially for travel during the high season.
