When to Visit Providence

by SmarterTravel Staff

Providence is a college town, with many school-related events attracting large crowds and dictating the flow of tourism. The most popular times to visit are spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild, school activities are in full swing, and spring blooms or fall colors are at their peak.

Summer brings fewer visitors, warmer weather, and lower prices, making it an ideal time to see the city. Winters are the least expensive due to college vacations and a chance of snow. However, popular events happen throughout the year and can pack the city for days at a time.

  • high season: March to May, September to November
  • low season: December to February, June to August

Weather Information

Providence experiences four seasons, with a temperate climate and an annual average temperature of 51 degrees. April through June and September through mid-November bring moderate and pleasant weather. January and February see the coldest temperatures, with an average of 30 degrees, while July and August are the warmest months, with an average of 73 degrees. Snow starts to fall as early as November or as late as January and can last into mid-March, with the heaviest accumulation in February. Rain can fall anytime throughout the year.

Crowd Information

The city sees the heaviest crowds during college homecoming weekends, graduations, and orientations. Two major events bring visitors during the summer months: Waterfire, which runs two weekends per month from June through October, and Providence SoundSession taking place during the third week of July. The Trinity Repertory Company produces an annual production of A Christmas Carol, which draws a large audience each year.

Closure Information

Hotels, restaurants, and attractions remain open throughout the year.

When to Save

Providence is an affordable destination year-round, but limited downtown hotel availability can cause prices to rise during special events and high seasons. The fall is the busiest and most expensive time to visit. Prices drop during the low seasons, especially in January after the holiday rush.

When to Book

Visitors with flexible travel plans can take advantage of low last-minute airfares. However, those with a set schedule should book flights at least three weeks in advance to obtain lower prices and ensure availability, especially for travel during the high season.

Last-minute lodging is available most of the year, but book at least two months in advance for visits during high seasons or special events, especially in May for graduation, as there is limited room availability downtown.
