Located in the Pacific Northwest, Portland, Oregon, sees its fair share of rain, but can be visited year-round. The most popular time to visit is during the summer when schools are on break, the weather is dry, and outdoor festivals are common.
Winter is the least popular time to visit due to its unfavorable weather, but is also the least expensive time with fewer crowds and more availability. Lower prices and fewer crowds also occur during the spring and fall shoulder seasons, when the weather is cooler and schools are in session.
- high season: mid-May to October
- low season: January to March
- shoulder season: November to December, April to mid-May
June through August tends to be fairly sunny, while November through May can bring rain. Spring can be cool, with weather shifting between sun and showers. The summer is warm, with an average high of 79 degrees in July. September and October tend to be mild and pleasant, with warm temperatures and less rain than in the winter. The busiest times are during festivals such as the Portland Jazz Festival over Presidents' Day weekend, the Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade in June, Oregon Brewers Festival in late July, and the Portland Marathon in October. October through April is a less crowded time to visit; however, November and December can be busy with holiday shoppers because Oregon doesn't have sales tax.
Hotels, restaurants, and attractions remain open throughout the year.
When to Save
Hotel prices drop January through March because of weaker demand. Although deals and discounts are available year-round, they are most prevalent during the off-season. Lodging can be more expensive from mid-May through October due to an increase in visitation.
When to Book
For hotels, last-minute lodging is available, but it's wise to book at least one month in advance for travel during the low or shoulder season and book at least three months in advance for travel during the high season to ensure availability.
For airfare, flexible travel plans may make it possible to take advantage of low last-minute fares. However, those with a set schedule should book flights at least three weeks in advance to obtain lower prices and ensure availability, especially for travel during the high season.
