What to pack for a long car ride with your pet

If you’re planning a road trip with your pet, there are a few items you can pack to ensure your four-legged friend has a safe and comfortable journey.

Start by bringing enough food, water (can’t go wrong with ice cubes in a Ziploc bag), and treats to last the duration of the trip. Plus, a few of your pal’s favorite toys will add a sense of familiarity and fun. Even if your furry friend has a microchip, you’ll want to keep a current ID tag on your pet at all times. Also, pack an extra leash and collar as a back-up.

When it comes to a first-aid kit, it’s important to have a few of the basics such as gauze, tweezers, and medical tape on hand. In case of a critical emergency, print out and bring directions to veterinarians in the areas you’ll be traveling. Before you go, get a copy of your pet’s most recent health certificate with current shots, and keep it someplace accessible. Be sure to carry several recent color photos of your pet, in case you get separated.

You may want to pack a guidebook of pet-friendly accommodations and restaurants for places to stay and eat along the road. You can also research and print several options before you hit the highway. With these supplies, you and your pet are guaranteed a howling good time on the open highway.
