Travel certificates make great holiday gifts

A few years ago, my sisters and I were stumped over what to get my parents for Christmas. Both seemed well stocked on the requisite sweaters, housewares, and gadgets. My mother stated she was hoping to downsize and declutter, leaving a lot of fun trinkets out of the running.

We ended up getting them a gift they loved—a gift certificate for a B&B weekend. It was affordable, memorable, and (best yet) no clutter. And for proof it was a hit, we still hear about the good time they had, and my father even duplicated the gift for their recent wedding anniversary.

• AirTran: AirTran gift certificates are available in increments of $25. For every $100 you purchase, you’ll receive one credit in AirTran’s frequent flyer program.
• JetBlue: Purchase cards from $10 to $1,000. Cards can be used for any of the airline’s destinations.
• Southwest: Like JetBlue, Southwest’s cards are available for $10 to $1,000.
• BedandBreakfast.com: Cards come in denominations of $50 and up, redeemable at almost 4,000 participating inns.
