If you're looking for a Caribbean escape, the fall is a great time to snag a bargain. In Barbados, temperatures average between 75 and 85 year-round, though June through November is hurricane season and slightly rainier than the rest of the year. But the birthplace of rum offers a little something for everyone, from shopping and beaches to museums and hiking, in addition to great autumn deals.
This year is an especially attractive time to take advantage of off-peak rates, since the island is offering a Fall for Barbados package that includes free breakfast, a free one-day car rental, and air credits up to $300 when you book by August 31. Look to US Airways Vacations, CheapCaribbean.com, JetBlue, Funjet Vacations, and other travel companies that are participating in the promotion, so you'll be able to compare package prices.
If you miss the deadline, though, you can still take advantage of lower fall rates. For example, I looked at weeklong air-and-hotel offerings from Expedia and found savings of up to $203.
| Departure | Off-Peak Rate | Peak Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Miami | $550 | $733 |
| St. Louis | $742 | $880 |
| Portland | $661 | $864 |
Off-peak rates are based on travel from September 21 through 28; peak travel prices are based on travel from February 1 through 8. All fares were found using Expedia and include all taxes and fees.
While you're soaking up the sun in Barbados, you can also take advantage of fall festivals, such as the Barbados Darts Festival and the Food & Wine and Rum Festival, which both take place in November. Or, test your card skills at the Sun, Sea & Slams International Bridge Festival in October. The Sizzlin' Sand Beach Volleyball Sunsplash series is another fun event for spectators to enjoy.
