Big Savings in the Big Apple

Good news! The Deal Detective is now sleuthing out new bargains every week. Look for a new case each Thursday in SmarterTravel’s Deal Alert newsletter.

Dear Deal Detective:

I want to visit New York City, but it’s always so expensive! Have you seen any good vacation or hotel offers lately?

—C.T.

Dear C.T.,

While New York is expensive, the winter months are at least somewhat less expensive than the rest of the year. Most of the deals I’m finding right now are good through March 31, so if you can travel before spring then you should be able to save some money.

Right now CheapTickets.com is offering a Big Cities sale that features $75 off airfare-and-hotel packages to a variety of cities, including New York. The offer is valid for trips of three nights or longer between now and March 31. To book, enter promotion code “BIGCITY75” and look for packages marked “COUPON.” Purchase by February 24 to get the discount.

You may not have heard of New York City Vacation Packages, but this discount packager usually has good prices on hotel-plus vacations. Right now they’re offering two-night Winter Weekend Specials starting at $245 per person, including all taxes and service fees. The price is a good one when you consider the “free” extras that come with it, including your choice of either a tour of Rockefeller Center or admission to the Empire State Building Observatory; admission to either the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the American Museum of Natural History; shopping discounts; parking discounts; and a $25 discount off a future trip. These packages are especially good for people who want the full tourist experience and plan to use all of the extras. The deal is valid for arrivals any day through March 29.

Last but not least this week, Expedia has a hotel-only deal that’s worth a look, especially if you live close enough to New York that you don’t need the airfare component of a package deal. You can save 20 percent on your hotel price if you stay for three nights, 15 percent for two nights, or 10 percent for one night in the city. But here’s the catch: You need to book by tonight, January 17, to get the discount.

Need help finding a deal for your next trip? Please email me your request. Be aware that due to the volume of requests I receive, I cannot personally respond to every email. The more compelling your question, the better the chance you’ll be selected for an upcoming case.
