Provider: Adventurous Wench
Founded in 2003, Adventurous Wench does active trips for women in style. "We don't do 'roughing it'—everything is fine accommodations and excellent food," says company founder Deanna Keahey. The company's 10-trip roster features itineraries such as a California package that pairs wine tasting with hiking and sailing, and an island-to-island yachting trip in Greece.
The company tends to attract women in their 30s through 60s, many of whom are traveling solo and eager to make new friends. "We learn a lot on our trips, but it's never studious and we have a lot of fun," says Keahey. "In a restaurant, our table is apt to be the one with peals of laughter coming from it."
The Red Rocks Getaway to Sedona, an Arizona town known for its otherworldly rock formations and as a center for spiritual travelers, is Adventurous Wench's most popular tour. "It's a short, three-day weekend trip, which makes it ideal for people who are trying out all-women travel for the first time," says Keahey. The trip combines outdoor activities among the rocks with an exploration of the region's well-known "energy vortexes." You'll visit the ruins of an ancient Indian settlement, hike to the top of a mesa, go on a desert jeep tour or visit a vortex with a native guide, and eat local Southwestern specialties.
Sedona trips run in April, May, and October. The next trip departs October 19. The price includes accommodations, most meals, ground transportation, guides, and activities. Single travelers can opt to be matched with a roommate. The trip starts and ends in Phoenix. The Phoenix airport is served by seven different low-cost carriers including Southwest and JetBlue.
