Savvy travelers expect more from accommodations websites nowadays, and vacation rental sites are no exception. There are a few newcomers on the scene that offer great customer service and interactive benefits. While I'm still a fan of the old standbys (VRBO, for example), these new resources are definitely worth adding to your travel-sites-to-visit list.

In the past, there was no TripAdvisor (a sister site of SmarterTravel.com) for the vacation rental industry—no one-stop shop to find customer reviews of rental properties. And with thousands of independent properties around the world, putting together a user-review site for vacation rentals seemed a daunting task for any company. But FlipKey (also a sister site) has proved itself equal to the challenge. Here, you'll find property listings, user reviews, extensive search capabilities, and detailed maps. There's also functionality for submitting rate and rental inquiry requests. Destinations currently include the Caribbean, Europe, Mexico, and the U.S., with Canadian properties to be added soon.

VacationRoost offers professionally managed properties with a focus on ski and beach destinations. Unlike other vacation rental sites I've seen, here you can purchase packages like you would with a hotel or major travel supplier, with car rentals, lift tickets, and other add-ons bundled into your vacation rental price. Also useful is the site's deals section, which highlights the latest discounts and special offers from member properties.

Lastly, Zonder also offers professional management and assistance, with 24-hour booking and customer service, destination guides, and in-depth property descriptions. Here, what you see is what you get—all property calendars and bookings are updated in real-time, so you won't have to worry about waiting for a response from a property owner.

I recently used FlipKey.com to rent a house in Vermont. It was so easy and fun to use to. At first we didn't know where we wanted to go, but that's what makes Flipkey so great. Its easy to browse through a bunch of different areas. Once you choose a area you can sort easily by price or bedroom numbers to whatever meets your needs. Booking a place is just as easy. Its a simple as writing a email to the property manager., who was very quick to respond. I often go to Flipkey and mark favorite rentals for later trips. I highly recommended Flipkey as the go to vacation rental website.

Rentalo.com allows you to make a destination request or specific rental request and has amazingly diverse choices.

As both a user of vacation rental by owner websites to find vacation rentals and to advertise my own rental, I continue to be amazed at how VRBO is so often recommended. It's a dinosaur of a site, even with it's recent "upgrades." It's very time consuming to find rentals that meet all your criteria if you are looking for accommodations and inquiries are rarely responded to. While I get lots of inquiries for my rental, the ratio of inquiries to hits is awful and the ratio of bookings to inquiries even worse. I list on three sites: VRBO, HomeAway and WeNeedaVacation.com. My results from HomeAway are similar to those I get from VRBO. WeNeedaVacation.com has a full search where the visitor can specify everything he wants, including amenities and dates plus price. The inquiries I get are serious and, in fact, about 30% of my inquiries are via phone. My personal website link is prominent on WeNeedaVacation.com, where it is not on the other sites, and does help sell people on my rental. I may get a few more hits and inquiries from the other sites but over 80% of my bookings come from WeNeedaVacation.com. I'm sold on specialty sites.

My wife found a site, www.getmorevacations.com, where you can choose from vacation rentals that provide you with golf rounds, tickets to amusement parks, water parks, deep sea fishing, kids fishing trips, zoos and other interesting things for free every day of your stay. Works out great for us - I can go play a round of golf for free and my wife takes my nephew to the water park - her admission is free and we only pay for my nephew. Last trip to Destin, FL we saved about $400-500 on things we normally have to pay for on vacation. I pick a rental from one of getmorevacations partners and then I see if anyone has written reviews on it at Flipkey.com. So far, everything has worked out great! Most of my friends are pilots and I've turned them on to staying at vacation rentals through this site and now they get all their golf free when they travel. The site should really take off this year with so many people looking to save money.

I just used Flipkey to book a vacation rental in the first week of 2009. Found it incredibly easy to use; it gave me great locations that fit my search criteria, I was able to contact the management companies of the rentals and I received prompt replies. I read the reviews of previous users, which helped us narrow down the best choice. We chose a place that was highly recommended by other users, and were really pleased. The rental was fantastic, and the managers were very helpful in the booking process and during our stay. Flipkey made it so easy to search for what we needed, instead of prowling the internet and comparing sites. Plus, knowing what real people thought made us much more confident in our choice. Would absolutely use Flipkey again!

A must-know travel site is Momondo.com. Its a travel search-engine which compares prices on low-cost flights hotels and car hire. What separates Momondo from the other engines on the market is its search for European TRAINS. This is a new and cool feature that you can only find on Momondo. It allows you to can compare prices on flights and trains at the same time, which saves you time and money and gives you an opportunity to choose the "green" deal. So, feel free to check it out: www.momondo.com
