The Deal Detective is SmarterTravel.com's resident bargain hunter, Kate Hamman. She's always on the lookout for new travel deals and invites you, dear reader, to submit your own questions.

Emily writes, "I love to travel and since my little sister was about six years old, I have been promising her a trip out of the country as a high school graduation present. I thought, 'Hey, I'll be 30 by then so of course I will be able to afford a trip for both of us!' Fast forward eleven years and my smart-pants, straight-A sister hasn't forgotten that promise. My budget is pretty strained but I would really like to keep my promise and take a trip this summer before she heads off to college. I would appreciate any ideas and suggestions!"

This question allows for so many answers, I can't help but think of Dr. Seuss' book, "Oh, the Places You'll Go." Children's literature aside, however, I'll suggest Ireland, where you can still get out of the country in the summer—one of the more expensive times to travel—for an affordable price without a language barrier to stand in your way.

We need to start by getting you across the Pond. I found airfare from New York to Dublin on Aer Lingus starting at $595 (including taxes and fees) per person in June. There's no limit to the things you can do in Dublin, but you can also tour the countryside by renting a car for seven days with Hertz starting at €116 (about $158 U.S.; check XE.com for current exchange rates).

Once you decide where you want to go, you'll have to decide where to stay. You can save money and experience the local culture by staying in B&Bs along your way. Rooms at B&Bs booked through a website like Town and Country Homes Association can cost up to €40 per person per night, or €480 (about $648) for two people for six nights. The total cost for airfare, car, and lodging booked separately would cost just under $1,000 per person, or $1,996 for two.

Though it may cost a bit more, a bundled package might be worth the extra cost for the ease of booking. I found a seven-day package through EuropeASAP that starts at $1,559 (without taxes and fees) per person, and includes round-trip airfare from New York City to Dublin, a rental car, six-nights of B&B vouchers, and full breakfast each day. You must book by January 19 for travel from June 20 through August 30. The package allows you to tour the country at your own pace. The vouchers are also a fun way to keep things spontaneous, as you can pick most places to stay two days before you arrive. The total for two would be $3,118 (without taxes and fees).

Whichever way you choose to book, I have no doubt your sister will love Ireland and you will feel good about keeping your promise without breaking your bank account.

For my other readers, I ask you to help Emily with suggestions on places to go, things to see, and ways to save. Plus, please share your own tales of traveling in Ireland.

What a great suggestion! I had no idea flights to Ireland are so cheap right now. To be honest Ireland is just perfect for your first big trip overseas. I'll also second the Detective's suggestion of using the B&B vouchers -- I did this as part of a package deal from Aer Lingus and it was a great experience, allowing for a lot of freedom while at the same time keeping lodging at a very fixed cost. If you go in the spring or fall you shouldn't have much trouble at all picking a place to stay each night without needing to make reservations ahead.

The people and beauty of Ireland is unsurpassed. I love the Emerald Isle. Driving can be a nightmare for driver and passenger. Independant Dublin sounds great, but I would consider a Paddy Wagon Tour for exploring the Republic. Either way you'll have the grandest of times!

I have visited Ireland nearly 20 times! I suggest you do not pick up your car until leaving Dublin. Dublin is a great walking/bus city and parking is now more difficult and expensive. Save your car use for touring the countryside. It is a fairly short bus ride to the City Center and if you pick up your car at the airport you are already headed out of town! You can easily drive to the airport when leaving. Roads are very well marked. Watch out for speed cameras!

driving in ireland isnt that bad once you get over dirving on the wrong side of the road!

  • Lucy CTC - January 16, 2009

That is NOT a good suggestion regarding the rental car. Unless you pay a considerable amoun more a rental car in Ireland has a standard shift, the steering wheel is on the right side of the car and they drive on the left side of the road. For people unaccustomed to this they are an accident waiting to happen. A better and safer suggestion would be an escorted tour of Ireland and there are MANY companies that offer affordable tour. Another suggestion would be to do England with London as a base. No driving required and the underground and rail are fabulous. Next time recommend a professional travel consultant like myself. We work for the client not the supplier and budget and safety are a priority.

WE are looking for an 11 to 14 day trip to the Copper Canyon in February, originating from Texas. We are visiting friends in South Padre, are planning to go to San Antonio but are willing to travel to another starting point. We want the trip to include Batopilas. Many thanks in advance. Lucy CTC, I have to disagree with you. It's not considerably more to rent an automatic transmission than a standard. My boyfriend and I had initially rented a stick shift for when we arrived in Shannon, but we decided to upgrade to an automatic at the airport for another $100 (or about $8 a day). Definitely not that big a deal, and UGH - escorted tours are NOT the way to go if you want to see the real charm of a country like Ireland.

  • Abby Normal - January 23, 2009

I agree with SpookyGirl. Renting a car is the way to go. Escorted tours don't leave you any room for discovery! One of the simple pleasures of driving around a country like Ireland is finding new little surprises around every corner - something you don't get with a pre-packaged escorted tour.
