You've no doubt heard holiday airfare prices are going up. But if you've heard that, you've probably also heard they're going down. Both sentences are true, and therein lies the holiday traveler's conundrum: Is it better to book now or wait a little longer?

For those who aren't comfortable waiting, take heart: Booking doesn't necessarily mean you're done shopping. There are a handful of little-known tricks that give customers a chance to save money even after they've purchased a ticket.

  • Many airlines offer low-fare guarantees that provide refunds and/or credits to customers who find the identical flight they booked for a lower price. While these guarantees typically apply only to fares found on the same day a customer books, this season's rapid-fire fare changes make finding a lower fare more realistic.
  • Beyond that, many carriers give customers until midnight the day after booking to cancel a reservation free of charge. Airlines with this policy currently in place include British Airways, Continental, Delta, KLM, Lufthansa, and United.
  • Finally, it's worth noting that fares are changing drastically this year, in some cases enough to warrant paying the change fee to get a cheaper price. While it's unlikely most people will discover a price drop that's greater than the change fee, it's worth keeping in mind.

Below is a chart with low-fare guarantees and change fee amounts from all the major domestic airlines. Keep this handy when shopping around, as well as during the 24 to 48 hours after you book. You never know when a lower fare might pop up.

Airline Low-Fare Guarantee Change Fee
AirTran None $75
Alaska Refund fare difference, $100 discount code, same day as booking $75 online, $100 otherwise
American Refund fare difference, $50 promo code, same day as booking $150
Continental Refund fare difference, $100 travel certificate, same day as booking $150
Delta Refund fare difference, $100 travel voucher, same day as booking $150
Frontier 2,500 EarlyReturns Miles, same day as booking $100
Hawaiian None $150-$200 ($30-$50 interisland)
JetBlue Refund fare difference in the form of JetBlue travel voucher $100
Southwest Refund fare difference in the form of Southwest travel credit; no same-day restriction $0
Spirit Passengers can modify itineraries, but any fare decreases are subject to change fees $100 online, $110 otherwise
United Refund and $100 travel certificate, same day as booking $150
US Airways Refund minus $150 change fee $150
Virgin America None $50 online, $75 otherwise

What about online travel agents (OTAs)? Expedia, Travelocity, and Orbitz all offer some kind of low-fare guarantee, though Orbitz' Price Assurance is by far the best of the three. Orbitz tracks your itinerary from the day you book until the day you depart, and automatically sends you a check if the price drops during that time. Expedia and Travelocity have 24-hour windows on their low-fare reimbursements.

www.YAPTA.com offers a unique service that actually tracks tickets you are considering or have already purchased and sends almost daily reports when they change, as well as when it makes sense to suck up the change fee and redeem for a cheaper fare. This is great for airfares, and fantastic for hotel reservations since by and large you can rebook up to 24 hours ahead of arrival without a fee. Their system is not perfect, but I have saved a bundle since learning about them.

I booked a rental car through Hotwire. Today I receive an email from Hotwire with rates on the rental car at $85.00 cheaper then they billed me. I called and they told me they have no price guarantee soooooooo to bad. Good to know Orbitz does such a good job, I will be telling everyone about the bad customer service I received through Hotwire. Buyer beware!

Agree. I will never use Hotwire again. Booked a hotel and didn't realize until the next day that I had booked the wrong dates. I had to pay the charges even though I could not go at that time.

Hotwire constantly sends rental car 'deals' for your most selected destinations. Only a tease. Upon going to its site, and this always happens, you will NEVER find a 'deal' as low as originally presented.

  • suz - October 22, 2009

totally agree with freebie. Never ever will you get the deals. they just lure you into the website and waste your time.

Watch out for Priceline too - they did a bait and switch on my husband when he filled in everything to get a car through them. At the very last minute, the final price showed up - a lot more than the original price.

Hotwire also is too clear on the icons that they display with hotels, such as non smoking, shuttle service, pool, etc. More than 50% of the time, I am booked at a place that does not have something that an icon represented OR I am prohibited from smoking at a hotel that clearly Hotwire did not demonstrate a NON Smoking ICON. I always copy the original sheet that shows the icon and have battled with them and won, due to misrepresentation. Beware and be very cautious with Hotwire, cover your tracks thoroughly and print out everything. YOU can win a battle with them, but have the paperwork to prove that THEY did something wrong.

CheapOair also can be a rip off, just try finding someone you can actually speak with in English. Hotwire was more like cold fish. . .

Looking at the Orbitz site (follow the link above), it seems to say that you'll only get the refund *if* someone else buys the exact same itinerary later for less. They won't just track it and give you a refund if no one else ever buys it. Might be good for "IAD to LAX" but probably not so likely if you're flying someone more obscure.
