Sometimes the journey is the destination, but not when it comes to Orlando. As one of the country's most popular family destinations, getting there is all about finding the best fare so the rest of your budget can be put to better use at theme parks, restaurants, and hotels.

Luckily for families who prefer to spend their vacation dollars on fun instead of flights, Orlando is extremely well-served by airlines large and small. All that competition keeps airfare prices reasonable, especially for savvy travelers who compare prices before booking.

Low-cost carriers AirTran, Alaska, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, and Ted connect Orlando with U.S. departure cities, while WestJet flies from Canada. Major carriers American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, United, and US Airways also offer service to the land of Disney and Universal. Regional flight partners such as Delta's Chautauqua Airlines and Comair, Continental Connection, and US Airways Express fly to Orlando as well.

To find the lowest fares, start your search with the low-cost carriers flying from your home city. Often you'll be able to find good deals. For instance, a round-trip flight in late June from New York City was $224 on JetBlue, or $260 with one stop on United.

Keeping tabs on the latest airfare sales to Orlando is another way to find flights at their most affordable.
