The Deal Detective is SmarterTravel.com's resident bargain hunter, Kate Hamman. She's always on the lookout for new travel deals and invites you, dear reader, to submit your own questions.

Jess writes, "We're looking for a three-ish-day winter getaway—February or March. Girls only. Requirements: Sunshine, yummy food, fun/funky bars, short-ish flight from Boston/Manchester, Vegas, AND Denver, not too cheesy, fun/interesting shopping. A beach would be nice, but not an absolute necessity. It would be sweet to keep the flight plus hotel cost to around $500 each (we're all fine with cramming into one hotel room). OK…get to work, Detective!"

I want to point out to all my readers—before I begin the task of finding places that meet Jess's requirements—that this is the type of question that warms a travel detective's heart. It includes the five essential steps to plan a great vacation: the amount of travel time, when to go, best departure points, budget, and things to do. I encourage everyone who wants to take a trip to begin by answering these five questions.

The nature of Jess's question gives me the opportunity to walk through the steps of how to produce a destination based on her requirements and illustrate how the Detective plans a trip.

First off, Jess wants to travel in winter but she's also hoping for warm weather, which automatically cancels out many places in the north. Because of that, we'll keep our focus on southern locales. We also know that the budget is $500 for flight and hotel, so this rules out any far-flung destinations. We now know we are searching for a destination in the southern U.S., or possibly Mexico (depending on available packages). Jess would also like her girls' getaway to include a beach, fun nightlife, and unique shops.

One place to find inspiration is through our sister site TripAdvisor's Trip Ideas tool that produces a list of destinations based on the entered criteria. With Jess's requirements, some of the suggestions offered are Maui, San Diego, Myrtle Beach, and St. Petersburg, Forida.

After you've found several places that look appealing, you can then compare airfares to the chosen options. Since Jess has several people flying from different locations, she may have to narrow her results in a different way. For example, it will be cheaper to fly to San Diego from Las Vegas than Boston, and vice versa to Myrtle Beach.

Another way to search is to look for vacation packages through sites like Pleasant Holidays and CheapCaribbean, where you may find more exotic locations for a bundled price. For instance, I priced a package to Maui starting at $365 from San Francisco (other depaerture destinations available for a higher price) for travel through December 15. Keep a close eye on these deals as your travel dates get closer.

There is also a theme (girls' getaway) to Jess's vacation, which makes it easier to find packages specifically designed to meet her needs. Many providers like BnBfinder.com offer deals targeted for women, which include spa treatments, shopping coupons, and even scrapbooking.

Now that we have a list of destinations, as well as airfare and package prices, we can start researching the individual places. Begin by visiting each tourism board's website to get a better impression of the place, and to see if there are any events or deals being offered during your travel dates. You can also search for hotels, restaurants, shops, and activities.

After taking into consideration what Jess wants to do on her trip, I believe St. Petersburg is an ideal candidate for her vacation. The region's North Beach in Ft. De Soto Park has been named America's number-one beach by TripAdvisor, and the city features an arts scene that boasts more than 30 galleries including a Salvador Dali museum.

I priced round-trip tickets from Denver to Tampa in February starting at $270 per person (with taxes and fees); from Boston to Tampa in February starting at $235 per person (with taxes and fees); and from Las Vegas to Tampa in February starting at $217 per person (with taxes and fees). Motels start at $37 per night in February, and a B&B starts at about $149 per night. You may also have to pay a bit more for a third person in your room. However, even with the added cost, three nights stay at the B&B plus airfare still comes to under $500.

If being near the beach isn't all that important, Asheville and Napa Valley are also great contenders. I hope that, wherever you decide to go, you and your girlfriends have a wonderful vacation.

Hi Deal Detective! Ok new year, new decade and 40th celebration for me (and several of my friends). I'm looking for a long weekend (or even a week) getaway in early June for a group of people. I'm not yet sure of numbers, but would love to have a plan early so people can commit. (~10-15). Most of the people live in San Francisco (but a few in NY/CT area). I'm single and many of my friends are, but there will likely be some couples and the possibility of two younger kids ages 6 and 8 (not required). I'd love a beach, warm, tropical environment (have passport will travel) with lots of activities - scuba, surf, snorkel, yoga, sailing, bike/horse back riding, etc. Fun bars, dancing, yet not too touristy. Range ~$800-$1000 might be acceptable for the week. House rentals? Thx

We are 40 somethings. Ok. almost 50 somethings. We come from Maine, Nashville, and Kansas City. There are 4 of us. We can't spend a lot; (that $500 sounded great but I doubt it's possible...) but we won't cram 4 into a room, either! We all have grown kids... we are past the late night party scene... but we like to have fun...
warmth, excitement, shopping, sightseeing, a play, a gallery...all appeal to us. Two of us LOVE to cook. Two of us travel alot. None of us drink a lot. It seems like the vacation sites all cater to either YOUNG diva getaway stuff or OLDER women... where do we fit?

we have two mother/daughters travelling to NYC for a long weekend. we have price compared and using a starwood buy two nights get one free/ offer we have saved by booking airfare and hotel sepearately. Outside of consierge, what sources would you recommend to get discounts for entertainment, including a show and deals on meals in Manhattan, places that moms and college girls can both find inexpensive and still fun and trendy??

Go to funjet.com and type in your dates. I did this for a Cabo vacation and came up with a week, air/hotel (4.5 stars) all inclusive for $680 pp. And that is for a week! The hotel is Rui Santa Fe. I know there are deals now, and perhaps booking in advance for the winter. Good luck!!

I'm thinking the nightlife in Fort Lauderdale or Miami would be far better than St. Petersburg or Asheville. I have always had great luck with girls getaways to Nassau. Get an early flight and you can be on the beach by that afternoon. Once your there, it is quite affordable, great nightlife and shopping, and always good air/hotel packages online.

I'm looking to take a week longish (up to 9 nights) international getaway before the end of the year. I'm single & will be traveling alone. So, I'd feel safer if I were with a group of other singles around my age (34). My only requirements are that I'd like there to be a planned itinerary of tours/excursions involving culture, history, food, music, etc. I would like to keep the cost around $1000. I would be flying out of St. Louis, MO. Can you help?

My husband and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary Nov 2010. We'd like to plan a special trip. We've never been on a cruise-not sure we'd enjoy it, but open to suggestions. We're partial to outdoors activities and scenery but also enjoy cultural activities, e.g. about 6 yrs ago we traveled the coast of Maine to Bar Harbor. It was one of our best vacations. We also like to travel during shoulder season to miss the crowds. Any suggestions? PS Visiting England and Scotland has been a dream, but not sure we could afford it.

I WANT TO TAKE A TRIP BY MYSELF!! I am looking for an AFFORDABLE, 3 day-3 night trip just for myself. I seriously need some "me time." Not too far away. Some place I can go by car. I live in Rock Hill, SC. So, Myrtle Beach or, the NC coast would be nice. Doesn't have to be near a beach; I am flexible. Definitely need some fun activities, bars/dance places very near by. This is kind of like a "late b-day present" to myself. Please, please help me!!!

Diana - NYC - Besides Travelzoo and if you are a Citicard holder for discount tickets to broadway shows - just go to the ticket booth in Times Square early the day you plan to see the show. You may have to wait up to an hour, max I'd think, but you'll get heavily discounted tickets so if price trumps sightseeint time, I'd do it. For Trendy, I'd try and of the villages and look up spots based on the type of food you like. Try Fodor's online - thier destination guides and also the forums. Not to miss - Empire State Building, Central Park, Circle Line cruise or Staten Island Ferry, Times Square, Macy's if huge dept. stores interest you. There's so much to do, you have to prioritize and select based on your interests. Enjoy your trip!

Kikki, I was unsure if we would be cruise people. I'm a Rick Steves Europe kind of traveler. Not that I do everything he suggests, but the way he does it - inexpensively and local. So a cruise, esp. on a main line like Princess or Carnival, was not exactly what I thought I'd like. Then I started reasearching it and we went on our first cruise on the Caribbean Princess in 2005. The ship was about a year old at that time. We LOVED it! So much so, that we went again for our 21st anniversary. Then we took a family cruise and we have 7 kids. That was on Carnival's newest ship at the time, Freedom. Then I went on a girls cruise last June - a 4 day Canada getaway out of NYC, also on Carnival because you can't beat the price and I knew what to expect. While I loved the ship, the itinerary wasn't for me. But it seems you might like it. Now, if you want to do England and Scotland, the airfare is very affordable, it's the food and such that will be pricey. If you like coffee, bring your own and a french press. That was our biggest expense this summer. We couldn't find a decent cup of coffee anywhere. We finally decided Neros was the best, but I know between my daughter and I we spent at least $35 American each day just on coffee. We each had two cups a day at 3.70 GBP. Ouch! Flights were so cheap this May, until the 26th there were open jaws to be had for less than $500 US from the East Coast. Even after the 26h and into June flights were below $800 when they usually are near $1000. And, you'd be going to the Isles in the off season. I definitely think you could do it. Use Fodors destinatino guides, the user forums and type in your terms in the search field and you'll get lots of threads. Once you do your research, ask specific questions. The people there are helpful and knowledgeable as long as you've familiarized yourself first, you'll get the help you need. Then get a Lonely Planet guide and a Rick Steves guide for the places you want to visit. Also Lonely Planet and Rick Steves have helpful websites. If your heart's desire is Europe, then make it happen. If you want to relax and enjoy a romantic getaway, get a balcony cabin on Princess (Caribe Deck balconies are best) or Carnival and enjoy! You can't go wrong. It's vacation!

Traveling alone Sept 25-28. Departing out of /into NYC (would like a morning flight out and return to NYC no later than 2pm) . Price range: south of $1,000. Destination type: Caribbean All-inclusive. If stateside, a nice resort, walking distance from tourist hub. Not too far from the airport. Ideally, destination should not be more than 6 hours---3-4 hours is enough. Adults only would be nice. It's my birthday gift to myself. Can you help me make it wonderful?

  • Chris - August 13, 2009

My family of 5 have a week off from college and HS during Thanksgiving 11/21-11/19. We would like to travel to Mexico, Costa Rica to practice our spanish and seems affordable? We like to hike, beach, explore town and cultural activities. Renting a house would be nice. Flying out of Sacramento is best, SF/Oakland - ok.

My bestfriend and I want to plan a 4 night girls getaway in April. We want to go some where warm with beaches. Not a true family (kids) place, but somewhere the adults hang out. Nothing too expensive. And we'll be traveling from two different states.

  • Dawn - September 11, 2009

Looking for a long weekend trip that is inexpensive. We are 4 college friends who are now 40 years old. Three of us live in Texas and the other now lives in Virginia/D.C area. We are needing to go sometime after April due to one of the husbands job.

  • Netta - September 15, 2009

My cousin and I want to plan a 3 night girls getaway in October. We chose Louisville, KY as our destination, so we can drive and safe the money that we would spend on a flight for ourselves and the weekend. We have not discussed a budgut, but $500 or less would be great. We want to stay at the Sheraton. We are looking for restaurants ideas, shopping ideas, ni and most importantly spa ideas. Something fun and relaxing.

  • Patricia - October 20, 2009

I would like to plan a girls trip for my 40th Birthday in February. Possibly 5 people. The budget would be about $500 or less. Would love somewhere tropical. If not, a relaxing spa weekend away from New York would be great. Please help me! Would like to get ideas soon so that everyone could get their monies together. Thanks!
