The Deal Detective is SmarterTravel's resident bargain hunter, Kate Hamman. She's always on the lookout for new travel deals and invites you, dear reader, to submit your own questions.

Elke writes, "Looking for a vacation the last week of September [costing] up [to] $1,500 per person anywhere in the world. The vacation place has to offer activities, things to do. Thank you."

This is my favorite type of question, because it gives me free rein to explore possibilities all over the world—and do a bit of daydreaming on the side about each one. The fun part is that the options are endless. I could send you somewhere exotic, romantic, historic, adventurous, or entertaining, or mix and match all of the above. Before I get too far ahead of myself, however, we must remember we are working with a budget, so I will begin by searching for places that fit the (literal) bill.

Traveling at the end of September will help cut down on costs, because many destinations offer discounted prices due to a decline in tourism after Labor Day. Not to mention you'll get to take advantage of the added perks like fewer crowds and cooler temperatures. However, with the end of September right around the corner, we have to act fast.

First up is a leisurely nine-day tour of the Greek Islands that starts at $1,399 per person (without taxes and fees). Go-today.com's package includes round-trip airfare from New York City to Athens; two nights' accommodations in Athens, three nights' stay in Mykonos, and three nights' accommodations in Santorini; ferry service between islands; daily continental breakfast; hotel taxes and surcharges; and airline fuel surcharges. You must book by September 17 for travel between September 16 and 30. You can save $100 per person off the total price if you can leave in October.

If you want something a bit more lively, how about visiting Munich during its famous Oktoberfest? EuropeASAP is offering a six-night Munich Fall City Special starting at $1,049 per person (without taxes and fees). The deal, which includes round-trip airfare from New York City (other departure cities are available for a higher cost), six nights' accommodations, daily breakfast, and hotel taxes and surcharges, will have you drinking a pint before you can say lederhosen. Travel is valid until October 25, but you must book by September 28.

If you want something more private, Pleasant Holidays' Fiji vacation might be just what the travel doctor ordered. The package starts at $1,089 per person (without taxes and fees), and includes round-trip airfare from Los Angeles, six nights' accommodations in Coral Coast, round-trip airport transfers, and daily breakfast.

If you'd rather skip the beaches and instead spend your vacation exploring history and culture, then Air France Holidays' Cairo Vacation will bring out the Indiana Jones in you. The package starts at $899 for travel between September 28 and October 25 (other travel dates are available for varying prices), and includes round-trip airfare from New York City to Cairo (other departure cities are available for a higher price), arrival meet and greet, round-trip private airport transfers, five nights' accommodations, daily American buffet, 24-hour customer service assistance, and hotel taxes and service charges.

Just in case Cairo isn't exotic enough, go-today.com is offering a package to Bali and Hong Kong starting at $1,249 per person (without taxes and fees). The deal includes round-trip airfare from Los Angeles into Bali and returning from Hong Kong (other departure cities are available for a higher price), three nights' hotel in Bali, flight from Bali to Hong Kong, three nights' hotel in Hong Kong, daily breakfast in Bali, hotel taxes and service charges, and airline fuel surcharges. Travel is valid through September 30, but you must book by October 1. Other travel dates are available for varying prices.

These are my top picks for vacations all over the world that fit within your budget; it's now up to you to decide where you'd like to go. I wish you the best of luck in all your travels.

To all my other readers, I know many of you are junior Deal Detectives in training, and have probably come across some deals that might be the perfect fit for Elke. Please share any tips, strategies, destinations, or deals below.

Dear Deal Detective, since my fiancee's death this year things have been extremely difficult for me. My whole world has been turned upside down and i haven't been the same since he died. I went to Maui this summer for a week to recharge my soul and that was good for me....the islands and the hawaiians have a deep rooted connection to spirituality that it was great for me, as I was able to meet and talk with the locals and go to the spiritual sights (Iao Valley, Paia, Makawao, heiao's and various beaches). MY QUESTION TO YOU is: I need to take another trip in January 2010 to RECHARGE my soul again as that is the month that my fiancee and i were supposed to be married. I need to travel somewhere that will be healing, peaceful, serene, relaxing, beautiful and have places for me to visit that are spiritual and/or religious (i'm open to all faiths and dont define myself as believing in one faith). CAN YOU PLEASE help me???? I am in dire need of help! I dont know where to go and how to find the best deals...ideas i've thought about: Italy, Lourdes France, Rome, Santorini Greece....but i dont know what else is out there? and what you would highly recommend for me? I want to spend at least 10 days there in January 2010...my travel can start anywhere after January 5th, 2010 or after...thank you so much for your time and consideration...thank you for taking the time to read this...sincerely, soul searcher

My 17 yr. old son and I are looking for a vacation location that we can both enjoy the first week of November, when his school is closed. We have not been on a vacation together in several years. He would like to be able to use his passport, so the US is out. He would like to be able vary busy days of sightseeing with days of relaxation. Our budget is up to $1500 including air fare, all taxes and fees. What do you suggest?

Dear Deal Detective, I would like to ask for your suggestions of affordable, adventurous trip suitable for celebrating my 40th birthday. This is a birthday I didn't always think I'd live to see and I want to rejoice & explore more of the amazing world. I'm hampered by a very small budget (under $1000 and lower is better) but perhaps traveling in November would help keep some costs low. I haven't been outside the country much at all, though did get to go to Greece & Venice once. I'm open-minded about my destination and enjoy everything from walking, visiting hertiage sites, soaking up the feel/sights/sounds of everyday life in a place, kayaking, snorkeling, etc. Thanks for any suggestions you might have :)

My cousin and I want to plan a 3 night girls getaway in October. We chose Louisville, KY as our destination, so we can drive and safe the money that we would spend on a flight for ourselves and the weekend. We have not discussed a budgut, but $500 or less would be great. We want to stay at the Sheraton. We are looking for restaurants ideas, shopping ideas, ni and most importantly spa ideas. Something fun and relaxing.

Netta - A great place to start for your trip to Louisville is their CVB, which has listings for restaurants and spas, plus discounts on accommodations, attractions, and shopping. Find it here: http://www.gotolouisville.com/index.aspx. Have a great trip!

  • Family Dad - September 17, 2009

My family, wife and 2 sons, 6 and 11 years old, are looking for a memorable trip around Christmas - Dec 20th-29th (+/- one day). I am considering all-inclusive getaways or as close to that as possible - to avoid stress and hassles. We live in Southern CA and have visited most of the usual attractions here. My sons would enjoy "cool" activities and adventures. My wife would be happy sitting on a beach. I have always wanted to check out Central American ruins/jungles, etc., but never had the chance. I am open to other destinations (I have thought about the southwest/4 corners area, etc). Our budget is between $1000-$1500 per person and we are somewhat flexible on the budget depending on the opportunity. Could you please make some suggestions that may be good for everyone? I think this year or next may be our last chance to do something like this because my work and my boys' school schedule will be changing so that our vacation period will not match. Please help because I want to have a great vacation while we still have the chance. Thanks.

am looking for great rates to Aruba for our 28th anniversary its in January. I'd like to spend it there for five nights in a luxurious romantic accommodations for two, all inclusive package (flight included) on a budget of $2100.00. Oh yeah and must be at least four star accommodations with up graded rooms, can this become a reality I'd like this to be the honeymoon we never had?
