Anniversaries and Festivals

by Christine Sarkis, SmarterTravel.com Staff
Edinburgh, Scotland
For a rollicking good time, ring in the New Year in Scotland at Edinburgh's Hogmanay festival, which dates back to the mid-winter celebrations of the Vikings, Celts, and Romans. The party starts on December 29 with a torchlight procession and goes through New Year's Day, with events including an arts carnival, concerts, and fireworks. The most popular event, however, may be the street party held on the big day itself, December 31. Party passes cost £5 and can be purchased online or at Tickets Scotland vendors. For more information, visit the official Hogmanay website.

Big anniversaries and festivals offer yet another reason to travel in 2009. And, since many such celebrations include free events, it's a great way to get more for your money. Just remember to book accommodations early, since the events are likely to draw crowds.

Major Anniversaries in 2009 Include:

  • 500th anniversary of Henry VIII's ascension to the throne. Expect major festivities at Hampton Court Palace and beyond.
  • 250th anniversary of Kew Gardens. Special exhibitions will commemorate the event.
  • 20th anniversary of fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany. There will be special exhibitions, memorials, tours, and walks. The Czech Republic and other Eastern European countries will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of communism in 2009.
  • Alaska's 50th anniversary of Statehood. The Alaska Railroad is offering a free one-day pass anywhere the train travels to anyone who will turn 50 in 2009.
  • Missouri Botanical Garden's 150th anniversary. One of the top botanical gardens in the world, it's also the oldest public garden in the U.S.
  • 400th anniversary of Bermuda. The island will celebrate with special events.
  • 200th anniversary of Edgar Allen Poe's birth. Baltimore is celebrating with Nevermore 2009, a yearlong citywide festival.

Major Festivals in 2009 Include:

  • Manchester International Festival 2009: The second biannual festival features original and new works of performing, music, and visual art.
  • Homecoming Scotland 2009: Scotland is celebrating the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth and Scotland's contributions to the world, including golf, whiskey, and Scottish heritage. Events take place all year.
  • July 2009 XXV Song Celebration in Tallinn, Estonia: Estonia has a proud heritage of massive singing festivals, the next of which takes place from July 2 to 5.
  • Holland Art Cities: Boasting more art and culture per square mile than anywhere else on earth, the two-year Holland Art Cities is an event hosted by ten of the top museums in four of Holland's largest cities. Two museums (including the Hermitage Amsterdam) will open as well.

Around the world, demand is down and destinations are pushing hard for more visitors, so unusually good deals should be easy to find, at least through the first half of 2009. These and other emerging destinations provide added value since they tend to be even more affordable than more popular, established destinations. If you're looking for an affordable vacation in the coming year, an up-and-comer could be just the ticket.

Need more Central American destinations from the east coast.

  • Jenny Hill - December 11, 2008

Thanks for the tips! I was waiting for something to reassure me that Peru was a way to go. Maybe next time I'll see my San Antonio no that list. A lot of families are flocking to San Antonio and the Hill Country Region lately. It's 75 degrees here today! I just came back from Chicago where it is 7 degrees and I could hardly take it! The local amusement parks like Sea World and Six Flags all have gorgeous Christmas light displays. New this year is Schlitterbahn's Hill Country Christmas -- if you havenn't seen it on the Travel Channel, Schlitterbahn is one of the largest and best water parks in the US. With the mild temperatures year round they stay open through October. I also recently read that the Sea World construction team is building a multi-million dollar water park at the new JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa which will open in the spring of 2010. And while the kids are playing there mom can go to the 26,000 square foot spa!

I am looking for an all inclusive trip vacation to punta cana, dominic republic from april 9 to 15 leaving newark, nj or philadelphia, pa. this will be for 4 adults.

Great to see Kansas City on the list. One thing though, the Truman Sports Complex is also home to the Kansas City Royals, who will likely make some noise in baseball in the next couple years....you just wait and see.

  • Rudyflash - January 6, 2009

That noise you will hear from the KC Royals the next few years will likely sound like passing gas. If you really want to see KC and see a winner, come to the Kansas side of the metro to Village West and see the Wizards of Major League Soccer play at Community America Ballpark adjacent to world-class shopping and dining and the Kansas Speedway.

I recently returned from a trip to KC., and find your comments "right on." But I am surprised you didn't mention a rather interesting development on the Kansas side of the metro area. Built around a new NASCAR faciltiy (Kansas Motor Speedway) and minor league baseball park is some destination shopping and dining. I understand a casino is also scheduled to be built, and a company named Schlitterbahn has broken ground on what is advertised to be the largest water park in the world.

  • TB - January 7, 2009

There is one other thing I found fascinating in Kansas City. There is a museum downtown containing the excavated contents of a river boat that sank while carrying goods to the frontier around the middle of the 1800's. Steamship Arabia. History buffs should not miss that one.

  • RC - January 7, 2009

If you visit KC you should definitely check out the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

  • KCsNMO - January 7, 2009

Take it from a true Kansas Citian there is nothing worth checking out in Kansas. The actual "city" is in Missouri and everything west of there is bland suburbia.

  • Jan - January 7, 2009

KC is one of my favorite places. You forgot to mention the Country Club Plaza with great shops and restaurants. Also, Loose Park which is near the Plaza is perfect for a long walk or just "smelling the flowers".

  • Marvin S. Robinson, II - January 15, 2009

the largest known archealogical UNDERGROUND RAILROAD in all of North America is also in Kansas City- the QUINDARO RUINS free-port-of entry off the Missouri River...a sacred-space of the western worlds cradle of liberty

  • Economist - October 22, 2009

As a newcomer to Kansas City and a tour guide of the metro area, all the positive comments are solidly correct. My own discoveries and all the wonderful comments I hear daily from tourists and business travelers is that Kansas City is an amazing surprise. The article meantions good places, but visitors should also consider... Museums: World War I Museum (only one in the country) and Monument Steamboat Arabia Negro Leagues Baseball Museum American Jazz Museum Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art National Archives at Kansas Ctiy Mormon Visitors Center Union Station Wyandotte County Historical Society & Museum Diversion: Worlds of Fun / Oceans of Fun Kansas Motor Speedway Chiefs football Royals baseball T-Bones baseball Wizards soccer Public Squares: Countryclub Plaza City Market (open air market - great varieties of ethnic foods and live entertainment) Legends Shopping District Zona Rosa Shopping District Crown Center Shops Brookside Square Westport Music and Food: Kansas City has numerous outstanding restaurants and musical venues!!! See www.visitkc.com to learn more! For live jazz, try the Phoenix, the Blue Room, or Jardine's. For great KC barbecue, try Gates, Arthur Bryant's, Jack Stack, Danny Edwards, Oklahoma Joe's, Bandana, Winslow's, or KC Masterpiece.

  • Economist - October 22, 2009

You should also know that that the metro area has a FULL calendar of festivals and celebrations. On a given week, there would be more events to enjoy than you have time for! A random visit will yield a good experience any weekend!
