Winner: JetBlue
Second Place: Southwest
Honorable Mention: American
It's no surprise JetBlue is number one for in-seat comfort. Six rows of economy seats in each of JetBlue's Airbus A320 jets have a huge 38 inches of pitch—the distance from any point on one seat to the same point on the seat behind or in front. You have to pay a fee of $10 to $20 to sit in these "Even More Legroom" seats, but for many, the charge is a small price for the added comfort. Its other economy seats have 34 inches of pitch, which is still three inches better than the industry standard 31 inches.
Southwest's seats can't compare to JetBlue's, but the airline's 737s do offer seats with up to 33 inches of pitch—a tad better than average. JetBlue and Southwest have big leads over the legacy carriers and AirTran, which all average between 30 and 31 inches of pitch in standard economy.
