Winner: Southwest
Second Place: JetBlue
Honorable Mention: AirTran
Thanks to good bets on fuel hedges, Southwest did not feel the same financial squeeze that wreaked havoc on other airlines when jet fuel prices soared sky-high this spring and summer. While other airlines added new fees and hiked fares almost weekly, Southwest was able to remain fee-free and keep its fares from creeping up too much. Low-cost carriers JetBlue and AirTran were forced to add some fees and hike fares repeatedly, but both are still perceived as relatively affordable airlines compared to the legacy carriers.
