In a summer of increasingly high gas prices, many hotels and destinations are hoping to lure visitors with the promise of free gas. But do gas vouchers offer good value, or are they just a marketing ploy designed to get people to stay and overpay?
The good news is that gas vouchers can offer added value. However, don't let the promise of a free tank of gas keep you from comparing prices. Here are some tips for making sure you'll save:
- If the promotion is part of a package, be sure to compare regular rates against the package price. If the package costs more than the regular rate plus the gas card, book the cheaper rate and buy the gas yourself.
- If a hotel or B&B has a gas promotion, compare the property's rates against nearby hotels. If the rates still look good, you know you've found a deal.
- If you were already planning on staying at a property that happens to be running a gas promotion, then you're really in luck, since it's just icing on the cake.
Some destinations are getting in on the gas-rebate action, too. If you're planning on driving to or through Branson, Missouri; Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; or the state of New Hampshire, for instance, be sure to take advantage of free gas offers.
