American Offers Bonus for Hotel-Points-to-Miles Conversions
Taking a page from Starwood's Preferred Guest program, which awards 5,000 bonus miles for every 20,000 hotel points converted to airline miles, American is offering a 25 percent bonus for hotel points converted to AAdvantage miles, through March 31. So, for example, converting enough hotel points for 20,000 AAdvantage miles would earn a 25 percent bonus, bringing the total up to 25,000 miles.
The bonus applies to conversions from seven hotel programs: Best Western, Carlson, Choice, Hilton, InterContinental, Marriott, and Wyndham. Conversions from Hyatt, Langham, La Quinta, Melia, and Starwood do not earn the bonus.
Converting hotel points to miles isn't generally the best use of points -- there's more value to be derived from redeeming them for free hotel room nights. But if a conversion does make sense, for the sake of convenience or value, it will make even mores sense with the American bonus.
