Northwest's WorldPerks -- R.I.P.

Delta and Northwest merger (Photo: Delta/Northwest)

After a 23-year run, Northwest's WorldPerks program has issued its last frequent flyer mile.

According to an email from Delta, "the IT switch was flipped in the early morning hours" of October 1, converting the accounts of WorldPerks members into SkyMiles accounts.

Depending on their situation, WorldPerks members will experience one of the following three consolidation scenarios:

  • 1. WorldPerks members who were not already members of the SkyMiles program will find that instead of a WorldPerks membership number, they now have a SkyMiles number. The number of miles—both redeemable miles and elite-qualifying miles—in their accounts will not have changed.
  • 2. WorldPerks members who also have SkyMiles accounts and already manually linked their accounts should now have a single account, with a SkyMiles membership number, combining the miles from both programs.
  • 3. Lastly, and most problematically, WorldPerks members who also have SkyMiles accounts and did not manually link their accounts will find that their accounts have been merged automatically, provided the names and other contact information in the two accounts matched. However, if the account information did not match, the computerized merger process will be stymied, resulting in the creation of a second SkyMiles account. In that case, the member will have to manually consolidate the two accounts.

Action Items for WorldPerks Members

If you're a WorldPerks member—a former WorldPerks member, I should say—there are several steps you should take to ensure that your miles are properly transferred to Delta and that you are positioned to get the most value from your SkyMiles membership.

First and foremost, check to insure that you do indeed have a single account, with a SkyMiles membership number, that includes all your Delta and Northwest miles, and correctly reflects your elite status.

Delta expects to complete the conversion process and notify customers by the end of October. If you still have unresolved issues after that, contact Delta or Northwest by phone, using the contact numbers shown on your membership card.

While WorldPerks and SkyMiles are different programs, they have been brought into closer alignment in the run-up to the merger, so today they're more alike than they are different. Still, a review of the SkyMiles program's rules and policies would be appropriate for new members.

One major difference: Whereas Northwest miles expired after 36 months, Delta miles disappear if there's no account activity for 24 months.

Another housekeeping tip: If you have elected to earn Northwest miles for stays in one or more hotel programs, be sure to change your account options to reflect a new choice.

Finally, there's the matter of which program-affiliated credit card to consider. Former WorldPerks members who plan to earn Delta miles for charges will have to sign up for the American Express SkyMiles credit card, or another card that awards points that can be converted into Delta miles.

Resources

Both Delta and Northwest have detailed FAQs on their websites addressing most of the questions that are likely to arise during the merger process.

Are you a former WorldPerks member? If so, how has the consolidation process worked for you?

They are no longer giving 1,000 bonus miles to Platinum members who are not upgraded to first class on flights. This used to be called the "Platinum Upgrade Guarantee" bonus. I received it on my outbound flight September 27 but did not receive it on my return flight October 2.

My wife and I consolidated our WorldPerks miles into Skymiles during the summer. We also accepted Delta American Express credit cards (free for the first year). However, we are not happy with them because they are less widely accessible and will cost more next year than the WorldPerks Visa cards. So we expect to cancel them and to use USBank's cheaper FlexPerks next year (unfortuantely with an entirely different way of converting dollars charged into free flights but hopefully more certain).

I linked my accounts early in the summer & have been transferring miles between them up until a few weeks ago. After the switch on October 1st I see all my NW miles in my Delta account. So far so good for the switchover. My only complaint is that Delta offers less value in the perks/miles. I've been very unhappy with the benefits of the Delta miles along with the fact it now costs upwards of 40,000 more miles to fly to Asia on an award ticket. NW also had a far superior back-end IT infrastructure so their awards system offered more flights, etc. Delta is years behind... this was an all in all bad merger for NW fliers.

It worked out okay for me. I redeemed some WorldPerks miles for a trip this fall, and I was able to do so even though I didn't have enough miles unless they were combined with my SkyMiles account. This happened automatically--I didn't have to do anything to merge the accounts.

Total miles transfer OK but, no NWA account history. The truth is that Skymiles is a poor program compared to NWA. Skymiles has higher fees, fewer chooses for low mileage award seats, fewer bonus miles for elite travelers, off-shore call centers with poor english speakers and understanding skiils, and slow & backward computer systems (most of their IT programing is done in India - Delta Tech. LLC) Fewer America jobs to savea very dollars. The Worlds largest carrier does not care to change it ways or what its customers think or want.

I am quite disappointed with the change. I used to purchase everything with my USBank visa card. Now I am forced to switch to an American Express card that is more costly and that is not accepted in nearly as many places. I will use up my 100,000 skymiles and switch to the USBank's FlrexPerks program for my miles.

Similar to other posters. The accounts were combined smoothly - I had linked them earlier this year. The difference in benefits is significant - especially when using miles to upgrade from a purchased coach ticket. Not much we can do about it - Delta is now the world's largest airline...

My miles merge went smoothly, moved them all over to Delta during the summer. Northwest had a much NICER and more helpful customer service department. I picked up the U S bank Flex credit card because I prefer their customer service to Am Ex, and U S Bank gave 15,000 free miles if you took the card, which did not require a new application as Delta did. I like the Flex card although it's a totally different way to get free flights.

Combined NW and Delta miles merged successfully, instantly and smoothly.Noticied that Delta went and wasted its time by re-defining all earned activities by inserting non-flying award points, but in reality it is only logical that any miles posted to anyone's acct are not needed to have the posted miles heading re-designed as though it were to matter to anyone. Delta has always been far inferior to utilizing any cross reference between its own promotion,( their offer codes) shown at the bottom of any offer and their customer support folks whom do not have the slightest idea to why the codes were created. i believe Delta marketing are the worst in the industry since they lack common sense to provide its own customer support folks the tools to resolve issues before they become worse due to dissatisfaction. I suggest that Delta use the old NW method of tracking all promotions per ff member and get rid of their crappy methods of tracking. Delta marketing dept MUST assume the task of being accountable.Since per personal experience am getting of tired of educating customer support reps their own promotions per norm and their marketing dept hurts their airline's bottom line. i say, re-educate the marketing dept to operate as anticipated. until then,Delta will remain the typical pain in the arse that needs member participation to resolve matters which should never have existed from the first start. Delta is now the largest airline, but also if does not change shall become the largest pain in the arse program too. Never forget that merchant miles coming into a frequent flyer program always assist the bottom line. Therefore, learn cause monies can be spent anywhere for better results too. I believe the mess starts at the top of the rockpile and needs fixed. The bottom of the rockpile only functions as well as it has supportive depts above. i commend delta customer support reps for that hassles they endure, but always want to kick those above then a swift kick for their ignorance too. whomever is in charge of Delta marketing for its promotions, you best pay attention to your job or you could be soon standing in the soup kitchen to have some boot soup. get you arse in gear.i say.

Yep, AmEx card more expensive and fewer places to use it is my experience as well. Will be canceling at the end of the one year "free" use. NWA miles transfered to Delta Skymiles with about 1/3 of the miles going into the million miler account. Had close to 6 million miles in my NWA account and have no way, at this time, to figure out how they came up with the reduced number understanding that bonus miles likely do not count for the million miler account....would like to check the figures myself. Agree with others upgrades cost more with miles, FF mile tickets need more miles and harder to find seats. Will it get better or worse??????

  • Tim - October 8, 2009

I linked my WorldPerks & Skymiles accounts earlier this year and the process looks to have transfered okay (current year mileage, Platinum status) with the exception of my million miler qualification/lifetime miles. I had about 675000 on NWA and 80000 on Delta. The balance now shows about 400000 lifetime. Haven't gotten a reasonable response from Delta yet. Interested to know if anyone else has noticed this problem. I can't find anything that talks about different rules between the two programs for these miles.

Its R.I.P alright. Northwest prices were good yrs ago. Shame that they had to fold.

  • Anonymous Coward - October 13, 2009

Mike: Only actual flown miles count toward Delta's Million Miler. Bonuses earned through promotions or credit card offers do not count. I had about 2,100,000 lifetime banked miles on Northwest, but this only translated to 850,000 Million Miler miles.
