Vegas Traffic Plummets, Major Discounts Likely

Considering the economic climate we're all dealing with, it's no surprise that Las Vegas, which subsists almost entirely on the disposable income of its visitors (and their willingness to part with it), is suffering a huge drop in tourism. In 2008, McCarran Airport saw a 7.7 percent decline in traffic year-over-year, the single largest drop percentage-wise since 1981. To make matters worse, 2008 finished off with a 14.1 percent plunge, indicating things are getting worse for Sin City.

In all likelihood, this means deals will start popping up faster than you can say "Wayne Newton," as tourist-deprived hotels and casinos try to lure people back to Vegas. Chances are prospective visitors will find big discounts on rooms and upgrades, and, as we've already noted, airfare deals may be plentiful as well.

But in a recession, Vegas is a tough sell for obvious reasons. So will enticing deals be enough to reverse the trend? I'd love to hear what you think, so leave a comment below with your thoughts. Would you travel to Vegas this year if the deal was good enough? Or will Vegas simply have to weather the storm as Americans lock up their wallets?

Been going since the 60's and will continue to go whenever I get the chance... but the deals have to be right for me to chose a hotel or airfare.

We will definitely visit Vegas this year if a very good deal happens along. So far we have gotten some good hotel deals, but airfare is not so good on days when my husband and I can travel.

I love Las Vegas and usually go every year. However, cheap hotel rates aren't going to entice me because I already get offers from them (for playing penny slots!). It is the AIRFARE which has gone through the roof. I am NOT paying $350 to fly non-stop to Vegas (and that was the going fare today out of Chicago for a July trip.

We just returned from a long weekend in Vegas. We noticed that almost every shop (the Miracle Mile shops, Venetian, the Forum at Ceasars, etc) had 50% off sales going on. Some even had 70% off on certain items. Even so, the prices still seemed a tad high, but I expect they might decline even more during the year.

It's not just deals on rooms and flights, although that helps. The whole tone of Vegas has changed the past few years. It's now geared towards people with LARGE dollars to spend. We've been going for twenty years but the last couple trips haven't been as fun. The casinos seem to have tightened up on the machines, especially video poker and the table minimums keep getting higher. For us low rollers there's not many comps anymore and not many payoffs. We might not be going back to Vegas much longer of this trend comtinues.

Scheduled a trip over Valentine's/ President's Day weekend: booked airfare from ABQ during SW's 1/2 price sale (cheapest fares I'd seen in years), got $109/wknd night-$39/wknight rate @ the Flamingo, where we like to stay. I was quite pleased to get these prices for a winter holiday weekend.

I have gone to Vegas about 20 times the past 15 years. In fact I got married there 15 years ago. I have found lately the staff is not as friendly and the taxi service is expensive and the drivers are rude. I still recommend everyone go there at least once in a lifetime.

I just got a great deal on Southwest Airlines. I paid $71 roundtrip from Phoenix and got a hotel room (a nice one) for $25 a night. There are cheap eats slightly off the strip that are really good. Research the internet at Yelp.com. Have fun!

Still waiting for the deals to come up on local airports as well as casino rooms. So far the two have not come together.

It's going to depend on what's aqvailable when I am ready to go. I usually visit either in July or December and will definately go one of those 2 months.

Just go back from LV - annual Super Bowl weekend trip. It was not nearly as busy as it has been in the past. You can definitely see the effects of the economy. That being said - we found it great! No massive lines for cabs, open spots at tables & machines, etc. Everyone we came into contact with could not have been nicer. If anyone is considering at trip to LV - I would say there may not be a better time.

I told everybody YEARS AGO that this is NOT the way to run hotels--sure make them corporate of mob-run, but no COMPS??? What with resorts fees?? What gives?? Why should I pay for your room service?? With expensive rooms and lousy people ( no one longer helps a lady to the door anymore like they did me or wait with you while you wait for a cab--forget it)"
