It's not as if Southwest hasn't had its share of bad news recently. Remember back in spring, when Southwest's fleet was at the forefront of a significant (and costly) inspection-lapse controversy? And last fall, when the airline broke from its traditional single-class service by introducing priority boarding—for an extra charge? And while it has stayed out of the second-checked-bag fray, Southwest did add a third-checked-bag policy early this year.

And yet, through it all, Southwest remains seemingly impervious to the economic and public relations nightmares other airlines have endured this year. Passengers love the airline, and judging from the comments we receive, the SmarterTravel.com audience does, too.

And now, Southwest is set to become the nation's fifth-largest carrier in terms of traffic, passing Northwest. Southwest would have become the fifth-largest carrier anyway once Delta and Northwest merged, but I imagine there's some pride in doing it the hard way.

So what is this not-so-little airline's secret? Certainly, clever fuel hedging has played a role, helping Southwest keep its operating costs relatively low. This has allowed the airline to continue doing business without adding the extra fees most other airlines have starting collecting. With consumers paying more and more attention to industry nickel-and-diming these days, Southwest passengers have taken note of the airline's lack of new charges and feel valued as a result. As a saucy new Southwest ad campaign suggests: Second checked bag: $0, tiny bag of pretzels: $0, an airline that doesn't #$*!% me over: priceless.

Whereas Southwest has done some subtle changes (they use to provide a snack box on flights scheduled for more than 3 hours; e.g., PVD-MCO, but now they just offer a bag of crackers and a bag of peanuts), they are still the only ones that do not charge you a change fee should your travel plans change - or charge you for one or two checked bags - or charge you for the snack offering. That is a very smart strategy because if I know I may need to change my trip or I need to check one or two bags, I would give them more serious consideration than other airlines. When my mother was ill (before she passed away), it was very important to me to have the ability to change my flight without incurring a $75-$100 change fee.

I like that they don't charge flight changes.

Southwest Fuel hedges come to an end in the second quarter of 2009 and the financial edge it has been able to maintain will be gone.

Southwest is my airline of choice whenever possible. My wife and I make 5 to 6 trips a year back to Arkansas to visit her mother in a nursing home. We shop price and convience of times and Southwest ALWAYS wins. The fact that they don't charge for two checked bags is important as we stay a week or more per visit, and you know it is possible to carry on your own sandwiches or snacks, which by the way can be purchase before you arrive at the airport can save you money as well. My choice is think about you travel plans and travel smart to save money and add Southwest to your speed dial list.

My wife Maggie and I fly only Southwest for our domestic flying. And because we're retired, we fly a lot. Check out Southwest's Companion Pass program on tgheir Web site -- I've been flying free for nine years because of it!

Not charing for flight changes is by far the best feature for me! Along with that, you can cancel your flight up till the last minute and either get a full refund or "store credit" to use at a later, TBD, time, with no fees. It's truly the "no-hassle" airline.

If only they flew to Minneapolis. I find it rather strange they fly neither MSP nor MEM. Very aware of their short-haul, high-frequency style, which both airports would fulfill. Is there some agreement with NWA that keeps Southwest out of such impenetrable hubs? A loyal customer base and simplistic fare structure would clean the hometown carrier's clock.

Southwest is the best in domestic USA air travel!

Just wondering if you will ever be coming to the Madison, WI airport for service (Dane County Regional Airport). Thanks.

Southwest Airlines are making a profit, are providing an excellent service,so they must have,(overall) competent management and staff, plus they have a loyal hub of passengers,....there really isn't too much that one can add in this day and age! It's difficult to compare to other airlines when you have the foregoing. The motto would seem to be,"Fly with Southwest if at all possible".

  • karen in CA - June 12, 2008

SW earns loyalty by letting you make changes and cancellations with no penalty other than having to use credit within a year which is a nothing issue. They treat you well and allow one-way tickets with no penalty. I use them whenever possible.

I've never flown Southwest before BUT I know people who have and my daughter says next time we visit her in Florida fly Southwest. I intend to do that. I want to book now but was told you could book only a certain amt. of time ahead. I'll have to read up on everything.

Besides all the other pluses mentioned, Southwest has the most pleasant employees I've ever encountered. It doesn't matter if I'm talking on the phone or in person on the airplane, I have not met even one grumpy, disgruntled person associated with Southwest Airlines.

  • Margaret in PHX - June 12, 2008

I love Southwest Air. They have the BEST customer policies and service. Great senior fares, change ticket rules, friendly staff. I could go on and on. Only wish they had MSP on their agenda. I use them 95% of the time for the rest of my trips and been doing so for years.

  • Barbara - June 12, 2008

My airline of choice! If only they served Springfield, Mo. Hopefully SW will service the new airport in Branson, Mo. to open in 2009.

  • Bonnie - June 12, 2008

Southwest has been my favorite airline for over 20 years. The employees, the prices, their policies, the boarding [even when it was a 'cattle call' - first come - first served], and most of all the lack of assigned seating [you can choose where and with whom you sit]. The new boarding rule where families board between A & B does make it slightly more difficult to avoid the 'little darlings' at times...LOL. I also have noticed that the passengers are not being serenaded en route as often as in the past. They still display a sense of humor if you have to be put on hold - just one more way they make my day a little better!

  • hitman - June 12, 2008

Other airlines are and have been either too arrogant or just stupid to not pay attention to the way Southwest operates. If other airlines were smart, they would copy the policies that have made Southwest successful. But then again, arrogance and stupidity are always in abundance among the greedy. I, for one, am thankful for the way Southwest does things right. They have my loyalty and trust.

  • Irene - June 12, 2008

Southwest HAS it all together: low fares, no lugggage charge for checked bag, no change fees--what morecould anyone want?

  • Mike G - June 13, 2008

South West Airline = smart wallet awards

  • SWA Stockholder - June 14, 2008

Glad to hear the positive comments from customers. I own the stock because of smart management and employees who really try to do a first-rate job. All airlines are having a rough time right now but if SWA keeps it's focus, they'll likely be the last airline to go bust. Thanks SWA, I appreciate your efforts.

  • CherylH - June 18, 2008

I, like others, really like their lack of change/cancel fees. On another front, I (as well as others) would really like SWA to fly into MSP (Minneapolis). For me, I'd prefer a DTW-MSP route. SWA could put together a SWA Vacation package there for Mall of America. I wonder, is there some state law or other rule that keeps SWA out of MSP?

swa has the best & most affordable vacation packages compared to any other airlines or travel site.
