New Orleans Cabs Now Have Soda Machines

At last, someone has found a way to combine two of the world’s great innovations: vehicles for hire and vending machines. Now you can sip on an effervescent Coke while arguing with your cab driver about which route to take.

The owner of several taxi companies in New Orleans has installed soda vending machines in cabs. According to a report from NBC News, roughly 200 taxis in the New Orleans Carriage Cab and Yellow-Checker Cab fleets now have the machines, which can hold up to 36 drink cans. The beverages sell for $0.99.

Simon Garber, owner of New Orleans Carriage Cab and Yellow-Checker Cab, told NBC News, “You make a choice from a screen, swipe a credit or debit card and, for 99 cents, a cold soda pops out from a slot in the shelf behind the passenger seat. It almost places the can in your hand.” Garber said that he plans to roll out his invention in cabs he operates in Chicago and New York, and he wants to sell his idea to other taxi companies as well.

This obviously sounds like something a teenage boy would dream up—and it is. WWL.com reports that Garber’s 14-year-old son first came up with the concept.

Do you think this is a great idea? Or should it fizzle out?
