More Awkward Dating Ideas for Single Travelers

Cancel your reservations at Outback Steakhouse and embrace one of the many romantic Valentine’s Day activities available for people who travel. We’re not just talking about couples massages and lame hotel packages. We found a few more interesting ways to honor the 14th day of February. As an addendum to our previous roundup of Awkward Dating Ideas for Single Travelers, here are some more weird ways to get your Cupid on.

Go Chair Lift Speed Dating

Big White in Kelowna, British Columbia is hosting a chair lift speed dating event tomorrow. Single skiers will be randomly matched up on the Bullet Express chair lift between 2 and 3 p.m. Once the ride ends, participants can choose to take a run together or ski away separately, in tears. It seems like a bad idea to enter an enclosed space where your only choices are to either tolerate the amorous advances of the stranger occupying your chair lift or escape and fall to your death.

A representative for the resort told me, “Big White has been doing it for five years now. They have a lot of young Australians at the resort, so it’s always a hit and has been growing in popularity each year.” If it’s a young Australian you’re after, heed the call.

Use This New Dating App

There’s a new dating app for travelers called Wingman that is similar to Tinder, but instead of letting users browse pictures of singles in the neighborhood, it lets users browse pictures of singles on the plane. So that users can join the “mile-high club,” I guess. Because planes are definitely hygienic places that carry many attractive, freshly showered, and willing singles. The app was created by a 24-year-old person called Gabe Whaley who obviously knows nothing about planes other than what he saw in the movie “Baggage Claim.”

Buy a Billboard

It’s a legendary story of seduction: Brad meets Melissa. Brad marries Melissa. Brad makes annual public assertions of his love for Melissa every Valentine’s Day, inscribing “Brad Loves Melissa” on the largest things he can access, from hot air balloons to buildings. This year, you can experience Brad’s heroic true love story on I95 near exit 32 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where Brad’s monument to romance shines in a commercial ad space above the highway. Make it a stop on your Florida vacation.
