JetBlue announced it will begin charging $7 for a blanket and pillow onboard flights longer than two hours. The change is effective immediately. According to the airline, both products are eco-friendly and resistant to dust mites, mold spores, and other irritants. The blanket and pillow may be taken home following the flight.

JetBlue is spinning this as a customer-friendly move, saying, "We are constantly seeking ways to enhance the in-flight experience for our customers, and providing them the option to purchase The World's Cleanest travel pillow and a fleece blanket at an affordable price delivers on that promise."

Sure, the new blanket and pillow sound great, and it's not a total gouge because you can take both items home with you, but I don't think many people will be praising JetBlue's move. The airline also says "both items fit neatly back into the enclosed carrying case for use on future trips," but with baggage fees on the rise, who has room in their carry-on for a pillow and blanket? The whole appeal of airplane blankets and pillows is that you don't have to carry them on.

Color me unimpressed, and a bit miffed that JetBlue would try to spin this as a good for its consumers. For once, I'd like to see an airline play it straight with its passengers and admit that costs are up, times are tight, and free stuff just isn't in the budget anymore.

JetBlue could have begun charging for the same old blankets instead of offering an improved product, so at least the airline didn't pull a total US Airways on us. But no matter how you slice it, JetBlue is once again charging for something that used to be free.

Will you pay $7 for a pillow and blanket? Let me know in a comment below.

I'd pay $7 -- those old, dirty reused airline pillows are disgusting! I'm curious about this MicronOne fabric in JetBlue's new pillows and plan to research it on the cleanbrands website. Maybe hotels will carry these MicronOne pillows too!!

  • Sheila from GoVisitHawaii.com - August 5, 2008

I'd pay it, especially if that meant, I got a fresh pillow and blanket rather than the dirty "recycled" ones.

  • Ana - August 5, 2008

I not going to pay $7. When you can buy it less then that.

  • sue316 - August 5, 2008

I will NEVER pay any money for a pillow and blanket on any airline.Talk about cheap! I will also not fly with Jetblue

  • Mulbary - August 5, 2008

No I will not pay $7. I have always carried my own micro blanket because I didn't feel they cleaned those on the plane often enough for my satisfaction.

  • jvmurf - August 5, 2008

I would pay the $7. My question is: If I am on a return flight and carrying my $7 pillow and blanket, will it be counted as a personal or carry-on item?

  • SoCalMother - August 5, 2008

I agree with Daryl. It's a good quality product and given that it comes with a $5 Bed Bath and Beyond coupon it's a good deal as well. I'd buy it without flying!

  • ExAirlineEmployee - August 5, 2008

I wouldn't pay. I have always carried my own pillow & blanket on long flights. I would never consider using the airline pillow or blanket

  • kleewong - August 7, 2008

    I'll bring my own!

  • Roe - August 7, 2008

I would most likely buy it. I would never use the pillows and blankets before because they were always dirty. And you get to keep in so I think it's worth the $7.00

  • kmt - August 7, 2008

I would pay $7.00 for a fresh blanket and pillow if I did not have my own with me.

  • djc - January 19, 2009

The thought of laying my head on a pillow that someone else layed their greasy hair on or drooled on is just gross!! I'll bring my own and not have to pay the extra $$.

  • Rosa cruz - May 7, 2009

i'll bring my own pillow because is clean and my blanket.
