Expect to pay this Presidents’ Day

Taking advantage of the long Presidents’ Day weekend? Be careful you’re not taken advantage of on the road. The Wall Street Journal reports the combination of high fuel prices, increased traveler demand, and the one-two punch of Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day bookending the same weekend has led to a holiday that’s more expensive than usual.

Being creative this late in the game is key to snaring a good deal. Among the article’s highlights:

  • Expect to pay most at ski areas and Caribbean destinations, where demand is at its absolute highest. Off-peak destinations can offer a better value.
  • Be flexible with your travel dates. If you can add an extra day or two on to your Presidents’ Day getaway, you’ll pay less for airfare and get better hotel rates. Or, if you can avoid that weekend altogether and travel over other dates in February, you’ll most likely get a better price.
  • Consider driving. Even with higher gas prices, you’ll still pay less than a plane ticket.
