Daily Daydream: Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Anyone who remembers the brutal Bosnia War might not have Mostar on their top list of places to visit, but it would be a shame to miss out on this charming city. Yes, reminders of the war are all around Mostar, and you can even walk along the former front line, but most of the city has been rebuilt. Even better—Mostar is one of Europe’s sunniest cities, with mild winters and hot summers.

Since Mostar is located in a valley between mountains, the natural scenery is breathtaking. Even more breathtaking is watching the locals dive off the Old Bridge (a great sight in itself) into the gorgeous Neretva River.

Check out the city’s deep history, from the many museums to the preserved Ottoman-era buildings and mosques. Don’t miss out on the great local cuisine, either—prices here are much cheaper than in the more touristy European cities.

Where is it? Bosnia and Herzegovina

Where should I stay? At the five-star Hotel Bevanda, located in the center of the city. Or, go budget with a private room in the brand new Elite Guesthouse for $15.

What else should I know? The best way to get to the city is by train or bus from Sarajevo or Dubrovnik.

Who’s it for? History buffs, explorers who want a small European town feel without the crowds, sun worshippers.
