Wow! Big Megabus Summer Sale with Tickets from $5

Megabus.com, the big intercity bus system, announced more $5 and $9 fares this June, depending on route.

The bus line promises that at least 20 seats will be available at those promotional prices on "each eligible route" for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday trips June 1 through 30. Buy seven days in advance; tickets are on sale now.

Megabus operates a series of networks to destinations within one-day or overnight trip range from Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. Through connections, the line serves the most important cities in the eastern half of the U.S. A Canadian affiliate operates from Toronto to Buffalo Airport and Montreal, with intermediate stops.

Even without the sale, Megabus features year-round low fares. Pricing is capacity controlled, starting out at a very low level and increasing as seat inventory sells. The line uses a mix of modern single- and double-deck buses that provide Wi-fi, seat power plugs, wheelchair access, and other features.

Where they compete, Megabus speeds are competitive with the best Amtrak can do, and are frequently better. From Los Angeles to San Francisco, for example, Megabus takes as little as seven hours, compared with almost 12 hours on Amtrak. Even on one of Amtrak's fastest trains, the Empire Builder, Megabus equals the train's eight-hour-plus-a-little run between Chicago and St Paul. Of course, the train is much more comfortable, but the typical rail price, around $85 for Chicago-St Paul, is several times a typical Megabus fare.
